Sunny Deol, the reticent star recently at the first-look launch of the sequel to his earlier hit ‘Ghayal’ now titled ‘Ghayal Returns'. We got an opportunity for a close encounter with the brawny star and this is what he told Sandeep Hattangadi
Why 25 long years for the sequel of ‘Ghayal’?
There were a lot of teething problems, we couldn’t get the right script nor could we get the right director and then I was busy with my acting assignments and other home productions and also since the film focuses on four youngster, I had to choose the right ones and had to go through a lot of auditions to get the right youngsters and hence the project got delayed.
Why did so many directors opt out of the job of directing the sequel?
(Laughs) That you will have to ask them!
Is your character similar to the one in ‘Ghayal’?
How can he not change, especially since 25 long years have gone and so much water has flown down the bridge. He is more mature and doesn’t speak his mind easily, but is still the helpful guy who helps youngsters in their problems. He is not expected to dance and romance round trees.
Who are the four youngsters in the film?
The film will see Shivam Patil essaying the role of Rohan, the leader of the gang. Varun plays the role of Fattu, a simple and traditional guy. Apart from these two guys, two girls too will be seen in the film. Television actress Aanchal Munjha will be seen as Anushka, an aspiring photographer while Diana will be seen as Zoya who is a blogger. They have done a fabulous job.
Was it difficult to get good work from these youngsters? Were you a hard taskmaster?
Not really. I was not screaming around the sets but handled all the youngsters with a lot of patience and gave them a lot of leeway to perform the scenes according to their visualization.
Who is opposite you in the film?
Soha Ali Khan plays my love interest in the film.
Will the film have a lot of action?
But the action will be a lot different from the ones we see in films today which I have done already some 25-30 years back and today the action is limited to people and cars flying in the air. But this film has action choreographed by a Hollywood expert Dan Bradley. He has done a wonderful job.
The release date got postponed quite a few times.
Yes. Initially I had hoped for a Diwali release but the post-production got delayed and then we had to plan the promotions too but now we are definitely releasing on January 15.
