Listen to the original 'Hero' speak

Saturday, March 21, 2015

Jackie Shroff belongs to that breed of actors who have had a long shelf life after his debut in the hit movie ‘Hero’ in the eighties and now he is enjoying a second innings with good roles in super hit films. Sandeep Hattangadi spoke to the suave, fashion icon star about his recent life and times. Over to Jackie.

Your second innings has begun successfully now with super hits like 'Dhoom 3' and 'Happy New Year'? How does it feel?
I take life as it comes and I don't take hits or flops to heart and I am happy with whatever I get on my plate. The quality of life is important.

What are your forthcoming films 'Brothers' and 'Dilliwali Zaalim Girlfriend' all about?  Also, tell us something about your roles in them.
'Brothers' is a remake of the Hollywood hit 'Warriors' and I play a boxing coach who wears his emotions on his sleeve and does everything to teach his students played by Akshay Kumar and Siddharth Malhotra everything about boxing. In 'Dilliwali Zaalim Girlfriend' I play a rustic kind of a Punjabi who speaks Hindi with a Punjabi accent and it is a very emotional but funny character.

When is your film with Lawrence Postman cover story or interview releasing? Are you doing any films in the south?
The film is complete and has turned out well but I don't know what the producers are doing but I hope it releases soon. Yes. I am doing a few films down South.

After hosting 'Missing' and a magic show on television, will you do an international series like '24' like your good friend Anil Kapoor?
Yes. If I get a good offer I will certainly take it up as both 'Missing' where I helped to trace down a few senior citizens and the magic show were a hit with children and all viewers.

Your son Tiger is a successful star today. How does it feel? Do you advise him ?
It feels great as I am his father and he is a very hardworking boy, starts work at 8 am, does his physical exercises and martial arts workout very diligently.

Your daughter Krishna wants to be a director. Are you happy with her choice or do you want to launch her as a star daughter?
She is happy to be behind the camera.

Your debut hit 'Hero' is being remade. Your thoughts on that?
Yes. It's like being appreciated by your peers and I am sure Sooraj Pancholi will do a great job as his style is different from mine and my good friend Suniel Shetty's daughter Athiya is also in the film so I am eagerly awaiting the release of the film.

Any ambitions left like turning a producer again or directing a film ?
No. I am happy to be an actor and I don't have the financial acumen to be a producer.

Your secret of good looks at an elderly stage and the recipe for keeping fit?
No smoking, no alcohol, long walks, going to bed early and waking up early and eating good food is my regime for keeping fit.

How has Mumbai changed over the years for you?
It's become dirtier and more polluted, especially air and noise pollution which can lead to lung complications and people get heart attacks at a very young age because their arteries get blocked due to the polluted air.

There are a lot more gutters flowing with lot of waste plastic material which causes blockages during the monsoon season.

The authorities have to do something about it. In my younger days, there was lot of open space, very few high rises, very few people around, less traffic.
Everyone is welcome to Mumbai but they should keep it neat and clean.
