NEW DELHI: KARAN Johar is known for his tear-jerkers like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kal Ho Naa Ho but the producer says his upcoming film We Are Family is not a melodrama. "The film is not melodramatic. There are emotions but there are light moments as well," Johar told PTI.
Johar said he decided to rope in debut director Siddharth Malhotra for the ambitious project because the young director brings emotiveness to the story.
"Siddharth has brought in an inherent sensitivity to the story, which is an insight into the life of a modern Indian family," Johar added. The film is about a man, his three kids, his ex-wife and his girlfriend, who are thrust together under the same roof due to the demand of the situation. How they cope up with the new developments in their lives is what forms the crux of We Are Family.
We are Family releases this Friday and stars Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal in the lead roles. The film is a Hindi adaptation of Stepmom starring Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts.
"When you make a family film, you know that there is one set of audience that you have comfortably covered. However, in case of We Are Family we also wanted to win over youngsters," Johar said.
Johar is confident that the film will succeed as it has few competitors. "There are few movies released within this genre. I guess the last movie which came close to being a family outing was Paa. Before that, the only quintessential family film was Baghban which was quite a while ago," Johar said.
