Gabbar Singh and Obama in Subash Kapoor’s debut film…

Your film Phas Gaya Re Obama has a rather strange title?
Yes. It’s takes a humourous eye on how global recession which starts in the US can affect the underworld in distant UP. The film does not resort to being slap-stick or vulgar and is set in the vein of satirical cinema such has Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro.

What exactly is the gist of the film?
The lead protagonist Om Shastri played by Rajat Kapoor is affected by the financial recession in US and comes down to his village in the interiors of UP where he plans to sell off a few acres of land which he owns. He hopes to raise money to pay his mortgage debt which he has to pay up within 30 days. But he is abducted by the local dacoit gang led by Amole Gupte and Neha Dhupia and the gang trades this ‘NRI’ who they assume is a millionaire.

How exactly has the recession affected the dacoit gang?
Well, they have no horses; they run out of bullets to fire and liquor to drink. They lead a pretty hand to mouth existence.

What is the USP of the film?
The film has good comedy, wonderful performances by Rajat, Amole, and especially Neha who plays a role akin to a female Gabbar Singh. The music by debutant Manish Tipu is good.

And what was your experience while making your debut movie?
I started out as a journalist in Delhi, worked for a few news channels, and then I assisted a few directors. After going through that entire process I approached my friend and eventual producer Ashok Pandey and the final result will be out soon. I am excited about the Dec 3 release. It was great fun to work with my ensemble cast and crew.
