Arshad Warsi is currently riding high on the success of Jolly LLB. There is unanimous appreciation from all quarters for Jolly LLB and Warsi is on cloud nine now. “When you are telling the story of a guy who comes from a small town and takes on the biggest lawyer of the country, it is obvious that kahin bewakaoofi hogi aur kahi herogiri. All of that had to be believable and it is this very believability that has worked with the audience” says a effervescent Arshad Warsi, who celebrates his birthday today.
Though Arshad might be one of the finest actors in Bollywood with an impeccable comic timing he says he never dreamt of becoming an actor.
“I never wanted to be an actor. I was also terrible in business, so I didn’t want to be a businessman either. I was interested in choreography. But now after spending 17 years in the industry I think people have accepted me and I am a decent actor now,” says Arshad, who started his career with Tere Mere Sapne in 1996.
Arshad, who not only made the character of Circuit in Munnabhai MBBS and its sequel Lage Raho Munnabhai very popular and was instrumental in making the film a big success thanks to his comic timing and display of emotions, says, he never tried to do anything different.
“I never tried anything out of the way. For me, It has always been being in the right place at the right time. Now I’m getting a variety of roles and things are looking good,” he says.
Arshad, who has done a variety of comic roles in films like Sunday, Golmal, Dhamaal, the Munna Bhai films etc, says he would like to portray a grey character with lots of shades but feels that the Hindi industry doesn’t produce enough films with such roles and so naturally his choices are limited.
If one has to zero in on a grey character which suits his taste, he has less options to choose from, he says.
However, Arshad says he is looking forward to such a role. “I really want to do some serious and complex roles. I listen to a number of stories on a regular basis. Although, I haven’t come across anything like that, I hope to do such a role soon,” he says.
Arshad is set for some hardcore action in his next film, Mr Joe B Carvalho. Arshad will be seen in a whole new avatar doing some deadly action sequences for the first time. Arshad learnt Kung Fu and trained rigorously to perfect his moves. He even underwent a two-week training session.
