Here are some interesting facts about the civic body which you may not know
Set up in 1872, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is the second oldest municipal corporation in the country. The BMC Act was passed in 1888.
The other three metro municipal corporations are: Chennai (1688), Kolkata (1876) and Delhi (1958)
Mumbai’s population as per 2011 census: 1,24,78,447 crore
Mumbai’s population per sq. kms: 24,434
Mumbai gives Rs.70 crore to the Central government coffers by way of taxes
BMC’s annual budget: Rs.21,096.56 crore
BMC runs medical colleges and major hospitals like KEM, Nair and Sion
Mumbai needs 4,200 MLD drinking water per day; actual supply is 3,350 MLD
BMC has 51 municipal markets in the city
Mumbai generates 6,500 metric tonnes of garbage per day
BMC’s total conservancy staff: 25,706; total supervisors and employees: 3,474
BMC’s total workforce: 5,000
BMC has its own 365 vehicles and 841 hired private vehicles
Total road length in BMC area is 1,941 kms, of which 437 kms is concrete and 1,504 kms is bitumen laid
BMC’s education budget: Rs.1,800 crore
BMC has 703 school buildings, including those on rent; 5,93,377 lakh students study in these schools
