An exhibition for Indian artisans

The fifth annual PotliArts exhibition and sale will feature art, such as folk and tribal paintings, hand woven saris, dupattas and stoles, furnishings, tribal jewellery, masks, bags and artifacts, made by talented Indian artisans. PotliArts is a self-funded venture dedicated to providing a platform, voice and opportunity to talented rural folk. PotliArts sources, curates and researches the best in Indian tribal and folk art and craft by combing the villages of India and spotting the many talented award-winning artisans. Founder of PotliArts, Ritu Chandwani says, “We source, curate and revive original traditional pieces that have contemporary appeal.”

Photo exhibition by Lana Slezic
Award-winning Canadian photographer, Lana Slezic is exhibiting her collection of photographs on the daily lives of Afghan girls and women. Titled Forsaken, the exhibition is a collection of photographs that document Lana’s journey over the two-year period during which she lived and worked in Afghanistan. Speaking about her exhibition, Lana says, “This body of work represents a very emotional journey that has allowed me to learn about Afghan women’s lives in an intimate setting. At the worst of times, the stories are horrific and at the best they are consistent. It is my hope that the collection of photographs will communicate, influence and inspire others to learn more about the plight of Afghan women.”

Pop up store at Kala Ghoda featuring Shivan & Narresh, Anjali Mody and Aishwarya Nair

This pop up store will also showcase organic desserts and treats from AMAi by Aishwarya Nair. AMAi, a healthy desserts and treats brand, offers gluten free pastries with zero processed sugar. “I cannot be more excited to make House Of Tales a venue for the current trendsetters of design and fashion. The evening will showcase design in furniture and fashion, ranging from the quirky, functional and elegant furniture of Anjali Mody’s Josmo Studio, Shivan & Narresh’s stylish and trendy bikini sari to Aishwarya Nair’s unique macrobiotic pastry line, AMAi. Customers will not only get a chance to experience the unique collections that are on display, but will also have the chance to interact with the brains behind these exclusive brands,” says Neha Sheth, owner of House Of Tales.

The Collection – premium products for the discerning customer
The Collection combines 11 designers and one NGO who will showcase their products as a collective. Designers such as Mandalay, Bitter Lemon, Broiderie, Irony, Kokommo, Shawlart, Toon Towels, Libellule, Yasmin D., Passages, Schott Zwiesel and Paprika will showcase their products for the upcoming festive season. Expect to come across exquisite jewellery, furniture, footwear, handbags, evening wear, children’s festive wear and even stationery at this eclectic exhibition. Passages, an NGO that helps women through the different journeys of their lives and also helps women with breast cancer, will retail goods at The Collective. “The Collection brings together 11 designers and one NGO for a delightful shopping experience,” says Binaifer Havaldar Antia, co-owner of Mandalay.

Simple Superstar premieres at Artisan
Simple Superstar is the story of India’s first ever YouTube star, Wilbur Sargunaraj. Wilbur is an ordinary man from India, who dreams of succeeding as a famous musician. The movie is about his dreams and the barriers of day-to-day life that force him to consider giving up on his dream. Simple Superstar has been shown at the Calgary Film Festival, Toronto South Asian Filmi Film Festival and the South Asian Film Festival in San Francisco. The feature film is now coming to Mumbai for its Asian premier at Artisans’ Centre. Adrien Roche, producer of Overdose Productions in Kolkata, says, “I am confident that Simple Superstar will be a landmark film for a new genre that hasn’t been explored at all in India.”

Walk for Peace
Celebrity designer Rajat Tangri will dress up celebrities such as Mohit Chauhan, Kunal Ganjawala, Anu Malik, Sunil Gavaskar, Hiten Tejwani, Siddharth Shukla, Karan Kundra and Vipul Shah, from the field of Bollywood, television and sports, for a charity show called Walk for Peace. This show is initiated by Kia Scherr of One Life Alliance and Welingkar School, in the memory of the 26/11 terror attack. Their mission is to counter-balance terrorism with love and compassion as a way to increase the peace index in the world. The theme of the show is Undying Spirit of Mumbai and the collection also pays tribute to Mumbai’s never-say-die attitude. Rajat says, “I’m honoured to be associated with Walk for Peace. It is a great opportunity for me to be associated for this worthy cause.”

Revivalist by Ritu Kumar

For the last four decades, Ritu Kumar has pioneered the revival of the finest textile techniques that our country boasts of. Now, she’s introduced a series of signature collections under the label Revivalist. The first in the series is the Kutch Collection, which is based on Jat embroidery. Telling us more about it, Ritu says, “The collection is based on an embroidery known in the region as ‘Jat’ which is practised traditionally by the Garasia Jats, a pastoralist nomadic community. Jat embroideries are ethnic in style and are done by the Garasia women. The stitches are made in geometric patterns, following the weave of the cloth and are a very fine configuration, in cross-stitches, embellished with minute mirrors. Yokes of these have been created to form various styles giving the pieces a unique blend of continuous cultural techniques.The collection starts from Rs 22,500 onwards.
