Jai Ho Laddoo Meetha Paan

Chewing the mixture of areca nut and betel leaf popularly known as paan is an  Indian tradition which dates back thousands of years. Vatsyayana included betel leaf in the solah shringar, one of the 16 toiletries. It was and still is a part of the religious ritual and is offered to the gods. Paan was however forbidden to widows, students and  ascetics. Only married men and women were allowed to eat tambula.

Today, the number of people who savour ‘paans’ have not only increased but they are also on the lookout for different varieties. Paan addicted persons will go the extra mile to have their fill of their favourite paan. ’Jai Shri Ganesh’ is a ‘Paan Shop’with several branches in Surat, Gujarat and has been run by such Pandey families as Basudev, Rajdhar, Gulabhdhar, Laalmani, Sheshmani, Ramdhar and others since many generations.

Bansidhar Pandey alone owns eight air-conditioned shops in Surat and is planning to open one more branch of ‘Jai Shri Ganesh’ in Mumbai soon. JSG manager Sunil Singh informs  that they have introduced two new paans. One is called  Laddoo Meetha Paan with a shelf life of two months.  It is made with ingredients like rose, poppy, saffron, coconut chocolate, and dry fruits among others, The second one is named Jhaag Wala Katha Paan whose  colour can be rinsed away  after consumption.

According to Pandey, who visited  Mumbai very recently, “People of Surat like to enjoy their paan. Being a family shop we try to give them good, quality products. Both Laddoo Meetha Paan and Jhaag Wala Katha Paan are a big  hit with the public.”
