Let’s talk about Tequila
It’s time to go beyond tequila shots as the world celebrates National Tequila Day on July 24
Tequila, concocted from the extract of a succulent desert plant Agave, was first discovered centuries ago by the Aztecs when lightning struck the Blue Agave plant and its heart, the Piña started pouring out a sweet juice. Tequila, which means plant harvesting, is derived from the primitive language Nahuatl and is an exotic drink that has to be created purely in Jalisco’s Tequila town.
Here are some facts on tequila, courtesy the good folk at Renaissance Mumbai, who are offering a wide ranges of Tequilas on this day.
The Tequila import has grown tenfold in the last decade, with the USA being the major destination of Tequila lovers. In Mexico, the Tequila’s originating ground, the people believe it is sacred. The Mexicans follow rituals and also drink Tequila as a medicine. Taking into consideration the abundance of this drink in Mexico, merriment occasions and festivities are all ordained with Tequila glasses. The favourite type here is 100% pure blue agave extract.
In USA, the distilled spirit, is quite popular. The expensive but delicious drink is sought after by youngsters at all frat parties! Tequila for the Americans is their go-to drink and Lucinda Hutson, in her book, describes Tequila as the American Favourite. Favourites here include Blanco and Reposado Tequila.
In India, despite states that ban liquor, tequila is consumed at a high rate. Indians love Tequila for its sweet and sour taste and margaritas are the third most ordered drinks in Indian bars. The favourite type is Blanco Tequila.
The African continent welcomed Tequila in the early ’90s and the import was legalised much later. Marking Africa as the fourth largest Tequila market, Favourite types are Joven and Reposado.
Did you know?
Tequila shots are famous but experts claim the right way to drink tequila is to sip it.
A major myth that tequila is born from cactus has landed many enthusiasts and experimenters in trouble. It is the extract of Agave, that belongs to the succulent family.
Tequila is often considered of only two types, cheap and expensive, but few know that it has five types.
As are all the alcoholics beverages in right quantities, Tequila too helps in soothing gastric ailments in addition to curing lung infections.
Experts know that Tequila has to be consumed singularly without any other taste subsiding it.
Tequila is also known as Pulque in its purest form. Mostly it is 51% pulp mixed with other sugars like glucose.

Eat healthy
Sante Spa Cuisine, brought to you by Kaneesha Jain and Bhavesh Jain, along with his brother, Prashant Jain, right in the heart of BKC, offers healthy food that can be interesting, creative and tasty! The genesis of Santé goes to Sonal Barmecha, owner, who being into yoga and meditation, enjoyed eating healthy, vegetarian fare, yet did not come across a restaurant serving only such cuisine. Sante Spa Cuisine started in Pune almost three years ago and has travelled to Hyderabad, and is now in Mumbai. The minimalistic design pattern uses recycled materials for furniture wherever possible, elements of greenery, neem wood plates and cutlery, banana leaf straws, copper glasses for water and corrugated paper lamps. The menu features only vegetarian dishes, prepared with natural and organic ingredients following healthy cooking techniques such as baking, grilling, steaming and sautéing. Cuisines range from Indian to Thai, Tibetan and Italian. Chef Shailendra uses local and lost grains such as ragi, sorghum and foxtail millets. The menu also encompasses a vast Vegan menu, Alkaline menu, Gluten-free choices and many other dietary options. Among the offerings are a ragi-based pizza and multigrain khakra chips served with beetroot and spinach hummus, zucchini kebabs and shammi kebabs of red lentil served with broccoli chutney. The beverages feature fresh juices of unusual combinations, hot tulsi tea and turmeric milk with a twist. For dessert, think muesli almond ice-cream; beetroot sorbet, and salted caramel mud pie with organic jaggery. “Good food is one of the pleasures of life. You don’t have to eat less to be healthy. You just have to eat right, and in the right quantities,” says Chef Shailendra.
