Songkran marks the beginning of a New Year in Thai tradition; it falls on the day when the sun ‘changes position’ in the zodiac. On this occasion, water is deemed to be a holy element, it signifies the spiritual cleansing and purifying of bad luck or grievances and is also believed to bless individuals with fortune and happiness for the year ahead.
The festival originated with locals collecting water that had been poured over Buddha statues for cleansing; this holy water is then trickled onto the shoulders of village elders and families, which signifies as a blessing for the New Year. Songkran has now developed into a kingdom-wide water fight, occurring in April, which happens to be Thailand’s hottest month of the year.
This Songkran, Nara, in association with Swades Foundation, is providing drinking water and water facilities to rural households in Raigad district of Maharashtra. Through this initiative, Swades Foundation will create rain-water harvesting measures, water storage facilities, distribution of 200 litres potable water per day per Household (HH) through HH taps round the year and more.
If you order Nara’s Khao Phad Samunprai which translates to their signature Butterfly Pea Fried Rice with Thai Herbs and sliced lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, young peppercorn and red chilli to give it distinctive flavours along with a bottle of water during your meal at Nara Thai; the proceeds will go to Swades Foundation for this cause.
The Nara Thai kitchen also specialises in regional cooking, offering an impressive array of punchy salads; spicy, sweet and sour curries, healthy stir-fries and much more. Explore native specialties as well as a roll-call of classics such as Pad Thai. Nara also boasts of a comprehensive vegetarian menu.
Nara’s signature dishes include: Kang Pa Nang Gai (Red Curry with Chicken); hearty, fragrant with kaffir lime leaves and subtly spiced. From the North of Thailand is the Burmese-style Khao Soy Gai. Then comes the show-stopping Phu Phad Pong Ka Ree (Stir-fried Crab with Yellow Curry) with herbs and spices, blended with evaporated milk, traditionally made in the central province of Thailand.
Wash it all down with popular Thai beers like Singha and a heady range of Thai-inspired cocktails that are sure to leave you yearning for more. If you still have room, try the delicate, guilt-free coconut ice-cream with assorted sweet Thai
