For seafood lovers
The Crab and Wine Festival at Mahesh Lunch Home at Vashi may have ended but the dishes that proved most popular are still available, along with their other signature offerings
In a quiet lane near the CIDCO Exhibition Ground at Vashi in Navi Mumbai is a restaurant that offers the most delicious seafood. Mahesh Lunch Home, which built its reputation in South Mumbai and is still going strong there, was one of the city’s first restaurants offering authentic Mangalorean food.
The 110-cover eatery in Navi Mumbai is spacious and welcoming; the service is attentive but not intrusive. The menu is large and includes Oriental and Continental seafood as well. You can get everything here from wok-fried butter pepper garlic lobster to Thai Chilli Pomfret; Salt N Pepper Squid to Asian Style BBQ Prawns. Mahesh specialties, however, are the dishes that made it popular—seafood in Mangalorean Sukka style; Mangalorean Gassi/ Curry/ Masala Fry; Mallipuram/ Chettinad and Vijayawada and Malabar curries, to name a few.
Mahipal Shetty, the restaurant manager, also tells us that you can get thalis, including a vegetarian one. The big draw, however, is clearly the buffet on Saturdays and Sundays for Rs 999 plus GST.
The Vashi outlet had a Crab n Wine festival between February 26 and March 31, featuring dishes such as Crab Butter Corn Soup, Sri Lankan Crab Tandoori, Honey Mustard Crab, Thai Crab, Crab Taka Tak, Mountain Crab, Tender Coconut Crab Masala, and many other varieties. Crab can be difficult to eat, so the restaurant thoughtfully offered several dishes in ‘boneless’ form (with the shell removed). According to Mr Shetty, the items that proved most popular, such as the Chilli Coriander Crab, will continue to be available at the restaurant.
“Most restaurants offer chicken and mutton dishes, but since we are a seafood specialty restaurant, those who like fish come here,” he says.

Pasta La Vista!
If pasta is your thing, then check out the pasta festival at the award-winning 212 Café & Bar at Phoenix MarketCity, Kurla; today, April 6, is the last day, so hurry!
Chef Paul Kinny’s menu has five equal options for vegetarians and non-vegetarians. Promising a different take on the traditional pasta, the new menu features combinations like Lamb Bolognaise Lasagne, described as “an ode to America’s favorite comfort food”. For vegetarian diners, there’s a healthier option of the aglio olio—the Beetroot Fettuccine Aglio olio, finished with basil and fresh sage. If you’re the sort of person who must whip out your smartphone to take a photograph of your food for Instagram, check out the Stuffed Seafood Sacchetti Pasta in Pomodoro Sauce.
For those who like to experiment, the Café is also introducing a unique twist to the conventional pasta preparations—the Cranberry& Blue Cheese Tortellini Carbonara; tiny bits of cranberry tossed in a bacon and ham preparation, topped off with a poached egg. And if you like mushrooms, try the 3 Mushroom Stuffed Tortellini with Puttanesca.
The Café offers a flat 50% off on alcohol from 12-9 p.m., but if you’re a teetotaller, their monster shakes will have you covered as well.
