If you want to add an Indian touch to your wardrobe, Vaya is the place to check out says Shalvi Mangaokar
Giving the city’s trendy fashion boutiques a break, here is a brand new handloom store. Vaya, meaning weaver, offers to you a variety of saris from the looms of Banaras, Kota, Kanchipuram, Bengal, Uppada, Maheshwar and Tussar. What’s refreshing is the fact that this store really has something different to offer, compared to other handloom shops.
You enter to see a spacious room filled with finely woven saris. And since it’s not congested, it gives you a lot of space to try on a sari and walk around.
The Rehwa society in collaboration with Indian Emporium, Bailou and Indira Broker has been showcasing their collection of handloom textiles in the form of the show Gulaal for the last 3 years. The store has a collection of them all.
Owner Mira Sagar has been associated with the Rehwa society for the last 20 years and it was her dream to open this store. “I have always wanted to open the doors to handloom in the city. Very rarely will you find such places here that offer you such saris,” she says.
Along with saris, they also offer dupattas, scarves, shawls and fabrics. The good part about this place is that they have something for everyone — right from working women to homemakers. From simple Tussar saris to the heavy Kanjivarams, there is also something for every occasion. The patterns and colours are very pretty and the fabrics fall beautifully.
The store is about two weeks old but the response so far has been good. Mira adds, “People have liked the idea and the concept of the store. We have had a fairly good response for the beginning and we’re hoping to see more people coming in.”
And being one of the very few handloom stores in the city really adds to Vaya’s appeal. Besides, the store is reasonable with saris priced `1000 onwards. Interestingly, it’s not just the money, but also the quality of the saris that make it worth an investment.
