Paintings embellished with 24-carat gold — that’s what you can see this weekend at an event that’s part of the Make in India Week! Art gallery Art
Desh is showcasing the work of Suvigya Sharma, who’s colonial stamp paper paintings embellished with 24-carat gold will captivate you. The exhibition will also have distinctive life-sized Pichwai paintings made with 24-carat gold and embellished with semi-precious stones. And, if you’re wondering how these paintings come to be, there will be a live demonstration on February 15. Artist Suvigya Sharma says, “I work in the medium’s two purest forms that are taught in Rajasthan. The first is called Kishangarh Shaili, and includes paintings with the most common subjects being depictions of ‘Radha and Krishna’. They are noted for the distinct long, curved neck, elaborated eyebrows and eyes, and the thin lips of Radha standing gracefully. The second is called Nathdwara Shaili, a form that depicts varied subject matter, but the most common is that of Shrinathji with cows in the background.”
Kushag Patel, director at ArtDesh and curator of the show, tells us, “As India creates a new chapter in its history with the dawn of modernisation, a period that is built by an altogether more synthetic fabric, our reflection on its past becomes even more poignant. For a culture that is rooted in the spirit of the land, earth, ritual and tradition, all under the gaze of its Regal heritage, and the passing forward of those virtues, the relevance of the art that represents that ethos gains more momentum.”
