Dev Goswami tells us more about the much-awaited tribute performance to acclaimed dancer Malavika Sarukkai at the NCPA
Winner of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and a Padma Shri awardee, Malavika Sarukkai is one of India’s most well known Bharatnatyam dancers. All through the week, the NCPA has been paying tribute to her work with a programme that highlights her journey as an artist. Earlier this week, different choreographies attempted to interpret her individualistic dance style at the Fine Arts Society in Chembur. There was also a film by Sumantra Ghosal that premiered at the Little Theatre, NCPA. The week ends with a tribute show at the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre today. Malavika tells us, “When a prestigious institution like the NCPA stages excellence and artistry, it signifies a vital step — that of forefronting the essential quality that moves art from the ordinary to the extraordinary.
