Sugar Rush joins the cupcake craze. Glynda Alves finds out if they stand out from the rest 
 
Oh how we love a good cupcake when we see one. The perfectly peaked butter icing sitting atop a soft bite of cake could send anyone into a state of buttery bliss. And Sugar Rush plans to do just that. 
 
Founder Malika-Rahat Khan trained at Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Institute in London, who decided to move back home to Mumbai and pursue her passion for baking. She tells us, “When I first moved back to India, a friend casually mentioned that she was craving Magnolia cupcakes (a famous cupcake shop in New York). I had been there before and figured I could give it a go in my kitchen. The rest, as they say, is history!”
 
The speciality at Sugar Rush are the mini cupcakes (`20 per piece) and Malika makes sure there is a flavour for everyone. You can choose cake bases such as rose, coffee, almond, banana, chocolate and many more. Top these with a butter icing of your choice which include chocolate, peppermint, rose, etc. We tried the cherry, cinnamon, apple and of course the chocolate cupcakes. All of them were pretty… so pretty that you feel guilty eating them. But only just.
 
The combinations are great and you can tell that they use quality ingredients. The butter icing is smooth and creamy and the cake is very fluffy. But, we felt the cinnamon cupcakes had a tad too much cinnamon powder sprinkled on top, which was overwhelming for such a tiny bite.
 
We also tried their brownies priced at `520 for 16 pieces. While the texture was good, the almond essence was overpowering. They were also flatter than we like and a bit too sweet. However, the biscotti at Sugar Rush was perfect. Crisp, packed with chocolate bits and nuts. A good cup of hot tea was all that was amiss.
 
Sugar Rush doesn’t offer home delivery as yet but they have tied up with Meals On Wheels which delivers to all of South Mumbai. Malika says, “For a regular order, 24 hours notice is fine, but if it's a bulk order, I prefer if people could tell me at least two days in advance.”
 
With so many bakeries getting on to the cupcake trend why should we pick Sugar Rush? Malika tells us, “Sugar Rush was built on the pure love for baking. I bake everything fresh to order and use no preservatives. Lots of people ask if I could top the cupcakes with add-ons like Gems, but I don't even do that. Also, I sometimes LIKE the fact that my cupcakes have a rustic, home-made charm to them that I haven't seen anywhere else.” We kind of liked it too.
