OR Design House is a delight to browse through because of its great collection and simple and spacious layout says Dev Goswami
In a city starved for space, it’s normal to expect most fashion stores to have shelves stuffed with clothes, tables piled with jewellery and a number of mannequins packed into very small spaces. However, OR Design House stands out from the rest in that regard. With just one centre table and clothes lining the walls, there is a lot of space for you to walk around, which gives you a stress-free shopping experience, enhanced by the variety of colours which lend a vibrant look to the store.
Unlike normal fashion stores, you will not find reputed brands or designers at OR Design House. This, they say, is a conscious decision as the whole idea behind the store is to showcase new designers. Most of their collection comes from within the city and Calcutta. The benefit of this is that the clothing at the store is affordable. For example, a golden clutch, shaped like a matka and adorned with crystals is priced at just `3,750, which we think is a steal.
Their clothes exude simplicity. You won’t find many neutral shades, but you’ll see a lot of red, yellow, green and blue. This too is a conscious decision, because while they give designers complete freedom to showcase whatever they want, they make sure that the collections feature vibrant colours.
While the walls at OR Design House are lined with fancy dresses, the center table features simple dresses that are perfect for daily wear. However, it is obvious that this range is aimed at the older generation.
Apart from clothes, there is a smattering of well-designed clutches with a lot of bling. You will also find jewellery such as earrings, bangles and necklaces. However, the options were quite limited.
OR Design House has an edge over the rest simply because of its pricing. Jewellery and accessories start from as little as `600 while the clothes start from `1,000. The clutches (`1,500 onwards), are a surprise because they look much more expensive. They have new pieces and collections coming in every 15 to 20 days and they change the store layout every week or so. Either way, you can always expect something new when you visit OR Design House.
