Townies need not look further than Vong Wong in Nariman Point as it is a perfect place for an afternoon meeting or lunch date. Samreen Samad tells you more
Located on the first floor of the Indian Express building, Vong Wong offers delicious and authentic Chinese-Thai food. On completing five years, the restaurant has launched a new Executive Set Lunch Menu which is perfect for a date, meeting or a relaxed family outing. And, guess what? It won’t burn a hole in your pocket at `750 per person (inclusive of VAT).
The spacious and elegantly done up restaurant has plenty of seating, a bar area and even a private dining area. While the lack of Chinese influence in the decor is a relief, the red Chinese lanterns hanging from the ceiling cannot go amiss.
We took our seats near the glass windows overlooking the Trident. And without wasting any time, started off with the food. Our attendant handed us the menu for the Set Lunch which was divided into starters, soup/ salads, mains, rice & noodles and desserts. Each section has around six options out of which you can choose any two or three dishes.
For starters, We ordered the Garlic Chive Prawn Dumplings, Sesame Honey Chicken Skewers and Vong Wong Wasabi Chicken. The Prawn Dumplings were brilliant with perfectly cooked prawns. The Sesame Honey Chicken was nicely cooked as well. But, the highlight of the evening had to be the Wasabi Chicken. I’m not the biggest fan of wasabi, but the chicken was cooked beautifully and the flavour of wasabi wasn’t overpowering but delightfully lingering.
We chose the Thai Raw Papaya Salad instead of the Clear Chicken Soup, but sadly, the salad was average. For mains, we ordered Hot Bean Stir Fried Chicken, Kung Pao Potatoes and Thai Grilled Fish in Curry Sauce. The Thai Grilled Fish was severed with green sauce and was very flavourful. The Kung Pao Potatoes and the Stir Fried Chicken, both tasted good.
Out of the two options for desserts, we skipped the pastry of the day and opted for the Fresh Fruit with Ice Cream instead. We were served apples, grapes, oranges and kiwi along with vanilla ice cream. It was a perfect end to our heavy and satisfying meal.
