Filled with joy and anticipation of a metre-long pizza, Dev Goswami visits Bandra’s newest eating joint, Pizza Metro Pizza
They say that you should never judge a book by its cover. But, you can’t help but feel the difference the moment you step into Pizza Metro Pizza. Be it the open kitchen or the friendly owners, the atmosphere here is something that is hard to find elsewhere in the city.
We quickly settled into our seats (they also have a balcony-like outdoor seating area) and had a look at the menu. True to their aim of serving authentic Italian pizzas, you won’t find any ‘Indianised’ pizzas here. The menu is divided into Antipasti, Pastas and Pizzas. We started off by ordering the Frittura di Calamari (`495), a simple dish of fried squid rings served with a beautiful tartar sauce. The other starter was Beef Carpaccio (`550) served with rocket leaves and parmesan shavings. Delicious!
All this while, our talk was solely about the metre-long pizza. The restaurant is not even a month old and thus, ours was their first metre-long pizza order and they took immense pride in this moment. The pizza, they told us, gave diners the option of choosing four flavours from the main pizza menu. That is something that I appreciated because sixteen slices of the same pizza, however tasty, can get boring.
Our pizza was made up of the CiccioBomba (Rs 950), Portobello (Rs 850), Pizza Metro Pizza (Rs 850) and Pomodori e Rucola (Rs 650). In all, we had meatballs, ham, salami, sausages, olives, mushrooms, tomatoes, rocket leaves and of course, cheese. It is difficult to choose between the pizzas, as all were delicious. The taste was simple and authentic, with the flavours of each ingredient complementing the other.
Up next was the pasta, which they make at your table in a cheese bowl! They use parmesan cheese and melt it using a cognac flame. Once enough cheese has melted, the pasta is poured in, mixed and served. The result is subtly spiced but cheesy pasta that you just can’t get enough of.
For dessert, we’d recommend the Ricotta (Rs 395) and the Tiramisu (Rs 395). They also serve wine, hard liquor and beer but sadly, no cocktails. The restaurant is a must visit. Just go once, and trust us, you’ll be making plans to visit again as you leave.
