Newly opened Dorje Doma may not be spacious, but it’s got such great products that you can’t help but squeeze in to get a good look. Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you more

Location, location, location — that's what Zenden Lama was probably thinking of when she set up her interior shop Dorje Doma, between The Gateway of India and Colaba Causeway. And it has clearly served the new store well, because it’s placed in the same line as Moshe, Indigo and The Table. Nestled between trees, the shop is not in-your-face , but will surely see a lot of walk-ins.

Dorje Doma is tiny, but it packs quite a punch from the moment you step in. While it specialises in customisation, there are a lot of off-the-shelf products that you can choose from, while you talk to Zenden to find out what type of furniture will suit you and your home best. Most of the furniture is designed by Zenden, while other products are hand-picked and sourced from across the country.

The sombre walls are decorated with quirky wall clocks, offbeat mirrors and are lined with patterned cushions. I’m a huge fan of bright colours, so it was a relief to see splashes of colour dominate each corner, instead of the usual browns, greys and maroons. There is an array of designs when it comes to cushion covers (`699) and the iPad and laptop sleeves (`999), with vintage cars and geometric designs, really caught our eye. We also loved the mirrors, with their cartoon themes that start at `1,500 and the technicoloured Buddha coasters that start at `999. The Tibetan bells lined up near the door were quite attractive as well.

The store has been designed by Zenden herself, so you know you are in for a treat if you ask the cheery owner to customise something for you. Furniture starts from `5,000 and varies according to the fabrics and designs that you wish to use.

Sitting down with her to discuss furniture is a delight, because Zenden is open to suggestions, criticism and won’t make you feel like a furniture novice, even if you are. We suggest giving her a call if you’re doing up your home, or just visit the store to pick up some of the colourful, quirky accessories to liven up your home.
