Goa alive!
For a true taste of Goan music, head down for the Living Traditions festival at NCPA, says Rhea Dhanbhoora
NCPA’s Living Traditions festival is back with a new region. The ongoing series showcases the folk traditions of several different regions of India and this time, the focus is on Goa with a two day festival at the Experimental Theatre.
The event will showcase a myriad of folk music traditions from Goa such as fado, mando, dekhni, dulpod, fuddeo and many other typical genres rendered using vocals and instruments such as the Portuguese guitar, classical guitar, mandolin and violin.
The coastal region of Goa may be tiny, but it has got one of the richest cultures and heritage. The traditional music typically comprises of Konkani songs but also includes music that’s combined with Western and local music. The festival will include an evening of fado on the first day, with performances by vocalist Sonia Shirsat, Portuguese guitarist Franz Schubert Cotta and classical guitarist Carlos Manuel Meneses. On the second day, you can enjoy traditional songs from Goa with performances by vocalists Miguel Cotta, Lisette de Miranda e Cotta and Chantale Cotta e Viegas as well as performances by Franz Schubert Cotta and dancers Telma Gracias and Carlos Bruto da Costa.
Head of programming for Indian music at the NCPA, Suvarnalata Rao tells us, “After the encouraging response we received for previous editions, we are pleased to present the Living Traditions annual series with a dynamic musical culture from Goa. Promoting folk traditions, especially folk art and music, that is constantly evolving in communities, incorporating elements of traditional and contemporary living is where our emphasis lies. We also hope to bring the country’s vast and spirited musical folk traditions to urban audiences.”
