Sounia Gohil’s boutique in Khar is a chest of hidden jewels. Shradha Bhatia uncovers what it has in store
When you walk into the Sounia Gohil showroom, you are hit by its subtle sophistication. The boutique is nestled in a corner of Khar and has minimalist white interiors, accented by dull lighting which is perfect for judging the fit of a dress on your body. The store creates a sleek yet homely atmosphere. It is clear from Gohil’s designs that she loves to experiment, play with the boundaries of fashion and use a host of colours in classic combinations. The first piece that caught my attention was a pink tunic (`12,000) with an interesting clasp around the waist — perfect for a brunch with girls or a formal night event.
Her collection has the perfect look for summer: there is a whole rack of white pieces, which are more like fashionable works of art than clothes themselves. They are essentially long tunics which are to be worn with churidars. Their best selling pieces is a gorgeous long white tunic (`27,000) with a sequined gold vest, which would look stunning with trousers as well. There is also a rack of embellished evening gowns (starting at `30,000) in imperial colours. Her range of beautiful saris, which began at `38,000, have clearly been crafted with care, each so different from the one before it. If you think that is all, think again! To add the cherry on top, the showroom also has a range of embellished clutches which would add a regal touch to any plain Jane outfit.
You would wonder where Sounia Gohil thinks of these designs which make every woman feel like she is draped in luxury, right? We observed her creative space, a tiny patio behind the showroom where Sounia meets clients and does her work. She favours detailed embroidery, sequined work, crystals and gems. Each piece is unique and oozes a rare elegance. Even thought it has only been open for a month, we can tell that it is going to be a hit with the ladies, if they can afford it.
