KIT OR MISS?

Friday, November 23, 2012

After 27 years in the business, Kit n Sam, a prominent salon in Bandra, decides to up its game to meet competition. Glynda Alves finds out if the new services on offer are worth checking out...

I’ve always had my reservations about Kit n Sam. Mostly because of the glass doors that I would peer through when I walked past. I would think ‘Who would go there? Why would you want people to see you getting your hair cut? What if someone I knew saw me at my unflattering best?’ But, the moment you actually walk into the salon, you’re surprisingly disconnected from the outside world. People can still see in, but when you’re surrounded by enormous and stylish mirrors, friendly chatter and the thought of a relaxing treatment awaiting you; you’re not as likely to be looking out. And as Sameer (the Sam bit of Kit n Sam) says, it’s just hair.

The unisex salon has decided to revamp its look and even though I imagined the salon to be small and poky from the outside, they’ve made good use of their space and it actually looks larger than it is thanks to the mirrored walls, neutral hues and beige chairs. Apart from the already existing services such as cuts (women: `900, men: `500), blow drying (`500 onwards), keratin treatments (`2,500) and manicure and pedicures (`600), they’ve now started a “spa” section. This includes four reasonably priced massages, including a popular sports massage (`2,000) that’s done sans oil. Their new services also include a spa pedicure and manicure (`1,000), the former of which I decided to try out. My male companion however, settled in for a 40 minute head, shoulder and back massage (`1,500).

HE SAYS
Sadly, the same space that we were treated to on the lower level doesn’t extend to the upper level. Or even the staircase leading there! And after bending my head and climbing the rail-less narrow steps, I was a little disappointed when I saw the spa room... it’s very small. However, once my massage began, I didn’t care about the size of the room. I got completely lost as knots were kneaded and aches were taken care of with argan oil. My masseuse was extremely professional and the pressure was consistent throughout the massage, something I really appreciated. Another interesting factor to note is that they don’t play clichéd waterfall music in the background, but instead, played easy listening tracks. For the price, it’s great even if you do have to bend to get into the room!

SHE SAYS
The chocolate pedicure spa was something I had never done before and was eager to try out. Plonking myself down into a Swedish massage chair while I got my feet pampered was pretty relaxing, even if the chair did go off at regular intervals. My pedicurist, Ravi, was efficient with nimble fingers and a critical eye on my toes. My feet were pressed, nailed files, blades were brought out and cracked heels soaked. But, the best was yet to come! After a good half an hour, the chocolate part of my foot spa began. First, a chocolate scrub was vigorously rubbed till my knees. The smell of the product is so delicious. After that, the chocolate cream was applied and then the chocolate mask. It was all I could do to not want to run away with those chocolate tubs! Overall, the pedicure was good but the whole experience is what really sold me.

OUR VERDICT
Having been around for nearly three decades, it’s safe to say that Kit n Sam already have a strong clientele. The salon is laidback and friendly and the services offered are on par with other leading salons in the area. In fact, they are one of the only two salons in the city to use the Seah range of Schwarzkopf products. And, with its new services and décor, it’s likely to become even more popular.
