Dev Goswami visits the enticingly named Kabab Biryani Kheer in Vasai and comes away impressed…
To be truthful, we weren’t looking forward to visiting Kabab Biryani Kheer (KBK) when we found out that it was located in Vasai. And seeing KBK did nothing to drive away our apprehensions. It is located in a newly opened mall, so apart from two food joints and a game zone, there is nothing else open and walking around an empty and lifeless mall is not the best way to spend a Saturday.
Also, do not expect a restaurant experience — the place just has a serving counter and an open seating area. As you might have guessed the menu includes kebabs, biryani and kheer. The kebabs are economically priced — chicken kebabs are priced at `120, mutton kebabs at `145 and paneer kebabs at `110. They are served with a coriander chutney, which we quite liked.
We strongly recommend the Chicken Kali Mirch and Chicken Banjara. Both of them are quite spicy while the Chicken Banjara has a tartness which, along with the chutney, turned out to be a delightful bite. However, the Mutton Pasanda was disappointing. The spices were all there, but the meat was quite dry. The paneer kebabs again impressed us and while the Paneer Angaare wasn’t spiced to perfection the Paneer Lassoni and Paneer Tikka were soft, tender and flavourful.
Moving on to the biryani, the Chicken Hyderabadi Biyrani (`130) beat the Chicken Lucknowi Biryani (`130) hands down. Though the Lucknowi Biryani can hold its own, we would choose the Hyderabadi Biryani over it any day — the flavours were great. The Mutton Dum Biryani (`160) on the other hand had the same problem as the mutton kebabs — the meat was too dry and tough.
We ended our meal with Badam Firni and Sahi Tukda both priced at `60. The firni had the perfect sweetness and had a uniform texture throughout. The Shahi Tukda was made up of a crisp and sweetened bread piece topped with rabdi and the end result was a dessert which is a must try.
All in all the food at KBK is well made, apart from their mutton dishes. If you are there on a weekend getaway or happen to be passing Vasai we would definitely recommend visiting KBK. But otherwise we do not think it is worth the trouble.
