This year’s Gujarati theatre festival has an interesting line-up
The National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) will be hosting the 5th annual Gujarati theatre festival, dubbed Vasant Gujarati Natya Utsav. The festival, which starts today and runs up to March 22, will premiere unique and off-beat plays including Mohan no Masalo, a play that pays tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and which depicts the hardships he faced on his journey from Mohandas to Mahatma.
There is also a psychological thriller, Koi Pan Ek Phool Nu Naam Bolo To, which captures the intricacy of the human mind; Kesariyo Phaagann, a love story between an introverted girl and an extroverted boy; Saptapadi No Athmo Fero, which takes a look at the complications that arise when Hindu marriage vows are broken; and Mahanirvan, a modern imagining of funeral rites brought out through musical elements of Gujarati bhakti sangeet, akhyan and dayro. If you love theatre, you should definitely check out this edition of the Gujarati theatre festival.
Deepa Gahlot, the head of programming for theatre & film at NCPA, tells us, “In recent years, NCPA has significantly contributed to upcoming and experimental theatre. Vasant Gujarati Natya Utsav not only provides a platform, but also encourages Gujarati theatre by staging their talent and innovative concepts. This edition’s line-up incorporates various genres and we hope that the audience will enjoy watching it as much as we have enjoyed putting it together.”
