The India Fine Art is holding a new exhibition by artist Thota Vaikuntam which pays tribute to the people of Andhra Pradesh. Gargi Bansod finds out more...
To explore the lives of the Telangana people of Andhra Pradesh, head down to India Fine Art and breathe their lives through acclaimed artist Thota Vaikuntam's latest collection titled Telenga Panels. Thota Vaikuntam's central characters are the people from Andhra Pradesh, his birth place. Telangana women, in particular, are frequent subjects of his works. He admits to finding the women of his village very sensuous. He attempts to capture their vibrancy and says that feminine beauty is a big inspiration for him. But, what motivates him even more is the nature of the people of his land. According to him, they are not just rustic, they are simple, innocent and rooted to traditions. At the same time, they are determined and resilient. This spirit of ordinary country folk makes them endearing which is the reason why he depicts them in his paintings. The collection Telenga Panels shows the Telenga folk in a series of panels, a style that he hasn’t showcased in his painting for about 15 years.
Vaikuntam says, “I’ve taken inspiration from my people in Telangana. I have taken details from their everyday lives, stylised them and made them look grand. That was my intention.”
In a vast career spanned over nearly 30 years, his paintings have been a part of several renowned collections and his works have been exhibited in New York, London and Birmingham.
