THEY ARE US
The Viewing Room is hosting their first exhibition this year, titled They Are Us: An Empathic Response. The show features artists such as Akash Choyal, Lavanya Mani, Prajakta Palav-Aher, Sharmi Chowdhury, Simrin Mehra Agarwal and Vinita Das Gupta, who are exhibiting artwork that they have created especially for this exhibition.
The show has been conceived and curated by Jasmine Shah Varma who says, “Across cultures, races and genders it is emotions, among other aspects, that are universal. Through the history of the arts, whether it’s literature, theatre, or the visual and performing arts, at the core are protagonists, their emotional palette and actions resulting from it. The imagery created by an artist, characters in a book, the scenes enacted in a play or a movie, or the ideas evoked in poetry exist for us to reflect upon our actions and the human condition. Once in a while, we are able to connect to these mirroring artistic constructs and empathise with the emotions depicted in them. We are able to say They Are Us and find clarity and succour in knowing who we are.”
The exciting line-up of artwork is made in mediums such as painting on paper pulp, tempera on silk fabric, sculptures made of paper, applique, embroidery and natural dyes used in paintings and illusionary triographs.
