TRAVEL BACK IN TIME WITH A SPECIAL SCREENING

History buffs, this one’s for you. Get ready to dive into the world of Pompeii with NCPA’s collaboration with London’s British Museum. A special film, titled Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum, will be screened to help you learn more about the history behind it. The film is about Pompeii and Herculaneum, two cities on the Bay of Naples in Southern Italy, that were buried by a volcanic eruption. The reason it’s so interesting is that even though the tragedy ended the lives of the people of two entire cities, the way it erupted also helped preserve their remains for archaeologists to discover.

The excavation of the cities isn’t complete, but archaeologists have uncovered several fascinating artifacts. Chairman of the NCPA, Khushroo N. Suntook tells us, “The Pompeii Exhibition at the British Museum is staggering. The film should interest not only those who know about Pompeii, but also those who are generally curious. We are honoured that special guest speaker Paul Roberts, is visiting and I urge everyone to attend this unique screening.”

Head of programming of theatre and films, Deepa Gahlot adds, “It is our privilege to be associated with the British Museum for this incredibly exciting exhibition, which offers a fascinating insight into daily life at the heart of the Roman Empire. We are thrilled to screen this unique film for our Mumbai audience and hope they enjoy the exhibition as much as audiences in London and around the world did.”

There will also be an exhibition on the Indus Valley Civilisation shown at NCPA’s Piramal Gallery in partnership with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya Museum. Also, on the first day of screening, Paul Roberts, director of the British Museum and curator of the exhibition, will be in conversation with archaeologist Shereen Ratnagar, to give audiences an insight into the lives of the people of the two cities.
