Jehangir Art Gallery will soon be exhibiting abstract paintings by the late Vijay Shinde. Called Shiv Shakti, the exhibition is based on the concept of twin realities — the Shiv and the Shakti. The paintings have been created in Vijay’s last few years, and many of them are in a diptych format symbolising Shiv and Shakti. Shiva represents the consciousness, while Shakti represents the energy in the cosmos as well as in each individual. The idea behind the exhibition is that even though one of them is manifested and the other un-manifested, they are both one and the same, in the ultimate sense.
Summing up the spirit of the series, Vijay Shinde was once quoted as saying, “Our culture is based on a dualistic, exclusive and adversarial approach. Some say intellect is a superior human function, while others say we are emotional beings. For me, however, the point is to try to connect these two essential elements so that they are put in balance, such that one doesn’t dominate the other.”
