BNHS Flamingo Watch at Sewri
In order to create awareness about the problems faced by flamingos, the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) has organised a Flamingo watch this weekend.
These flamingos come to the mudflats at Sewri in November every year and stay till the monsoon. Due to the increase in pollution and the construction, these migratory birds are endangered. So, BNHS organises such tours to educate people about this endangered species. Asif Khan, program officer at BNHS says, “Our last tour saw about 5,000 birds. We expect the birds to have increased to 10,000 by now. It’s a blissful sight to see these birds at the mudflats. They come in batches and there are birds in different shades of pink that can be observed. ”
Sewri Mudflats are also the place for many other migratory birds such as western reef herons, egrets, plovers, common greenshanks, brown-headed gulls, terns, sandpipers, black-headed ibis, redshanks, white-throated kingfishers, pariah kite and purple heron. So, get your binoculars and cameras ready and don’t miss out on this opportunity to catch a glimpse of these exceptionally wonderful birds before they get extinct.
