Are you tired of going to the same bar or restaurant every weekend and poring over a slew of menus that look alike? Read on, as Dev Goswami & Shirley Mistry tell you about some exciting events at restaurants across the city that promise to make your meal more fun
From eating challenges to chef interactions, restaurants across the city are going all out in an effort to make your dining experience about more than just sitting down for a three-course meal. These events are aimed at making your outings memorable, while giving them an exciting and unique twist. Read on, as we bring you our favourite events and challenges that restaurants in the city have to offer.
Bar Olympics at He Said She Said
If you pride yourself on your ability to hold your drinks, don’t miss out on visiting He Said She Said, where they host bar Olympics every Thursday, from 8pm onwards. The reason that we like their concept, is that they have much more than the usual beer pong (there are no extra charges for the game and you can avail of a buy-one-get-one-free offer on the beer that you consume while playing the game). One of the their most exciting games is the down-six-shots-in-six-seconds competition. We also like the sound of the Shot Chess, Shots & Ladders and Shots Ludo. Another great one is beer chugging, where if you manage to beat the record, you will not only get all the beer that you consume during the game for free, you will also be invited back every month with a group of all-time leaders, for a complimentary round of beer chugging. And that’s not it, they also host comedian Deep Chhabria, who adds a touch of laughter to the night.

Blind tasting at Silverspoon Gourmet
Silverspoon Gourmet routinely introduces unique, exciting culinary events, but the one that we like the most, is their blind tasting event. Called The Gourmet Adventure, it is their take on the concept of a chef’s table. For the duration of the five-course meal, you will be blindfolded and won’t know what food you are being served. But, don’t worry, they do keep religious and dietary restrictions in mind. Once you finish your meal, you can look forward to an interaction with the chef, who will tell you about the dishes served that you were served for each course, as well as the ingredients and cooking techniques that were used to prepare your meal. The event is accompanied by a wine tasting session. Check their Facebook page to find out when they will be holding their next iteration of The Gourmet Adventure.

Short film screening at The White Owl
Films and food — the two seem like the most obvious combination, right? That’s why we were really happy to hear that The White Owl is starting Films & Shorts night, from this weekend onwards. They have tied up with Shamiana, a short film club, to present a great selection of short films that you can enjoy while feasting on their modern European cuisine. The first edition of the event, which will be held tomorrow (from 6pm onwards), will feature films such as Cupido, Black & White, Banner and Chai. We love the fact that there is no extra charge for attending the screenings and hope that they continue to hold such events in the future.

Burger challenge at Café Sundance
If you love burgers, then Café Sundance’s burger eating challenge should rank high on your bucket list. Once every two months, they organise The Sundance Sasquatch Burger Challenge, where you have to finish their signature 1.5kg burger, in under 25 minutes. It might sound easy, but trust us when we say that it isn’t. The Sundance Sasquatch consists of just under 1kg of tenderloin beef, crispy bacon, lettuce, tomato, onions, fried eggs and lots of melted provolone cheese in a giant bun, made specially to fit the contents of this monster burger. If you mange to eat the burger within the time limit, you will win goodies, Sundance T-shirts and discount vouchers. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find out when their next burger challenge is going to be held, but you can check their Facebook page to stay in the loop.

BudChug at The Little Door
We really like The Little Door’s drinking event because of what’s up for grabs — free beer for a month! Yes, you read that right; every Thursday, at 11.45pm, the popular Mediterranean restaurant holds a beer chugging competition that consists of two qualifying rounds and one final round. If you win the competition, you will win the title of #legenddaddy or #legendmommy along with one month’s supply of beer, absolutely free.

The Coup Card from BPB
We love schemes that offer good deals on food, because if you enjoy eating out as much as we do, it can cause quite a sizeable dent in your wallet. Enter Brown Paper Bag’s (BPB) Coup Card. This discount card, introduced by the lifestyle website, entitles you to a 15% discount on your bill at 30 restaurants and gourmet stores across the city. The best part is that they have partnered with some of the city’s top restaurants and eateries, making the coup card truly worth spending on. Priced at Rs 2,100 for six months and Rs 3,780 for a year’s membership, this card is a steal, because there is no cap on the number of times that you can use it. This means that you will recover the money spent on the card in just a few meals! You can also get add-on cards for two other people who share the same last name as you, to dine at discounted rates at restaurants such as Birdsong Café, Café Zoe, Bonobo, Indigo Deli, Le15 Patisserie, Nico Bombay, The Pantry and Nature’s Basket.
Read a comic book at Leaping Windows
Formerly just a library, this venture is now the perfect place to head to if you want to spend some quality time poring over comic book after comic book, while sipping on a cup of coffee. While there are several cafés that let you read a book, this café steals the show simply because of their exhaustive range of comic books. They stock a vast range of comic books, with their most popular categories being superhero comics, manga and graphic novels. An innovative concept, expect to interact with the three enthusiastic owners about your favourite comics, when you head here.

Eat for less with The Mumbai Food Lovers Card
If you think that going out for a meal, simply ordering off a menu and chatting with your dining companions is no longer your idea of a fun outing, check out the Mumbai Food Lovers (MFL) card, introduced by a food blog that goes by the same name. Apart from enjoying discounts at your favourite restaurants and bars in the city, the card also makes you a member of a privileged group of food enthusiasts who are entitled to participate in special events, food outings and experiences that the blog organises in association with its partner restaurants. After you purchase the card, you will be privy to events such as bar hops, trivia nights, masterclasses and themed nights. A recent event held at Di Napoli, saw members enjoying board games, sumptuous food and discounted prices on alcohol. They also celebrated International Beer Day with a special event that included beer games at Loca, Loca. We spoke to Harsh Jhaveri, founder and partner at MFL Ventures, about the card and he told us that the concept is to give diners a unique experience, apart from just a good meal. “Apart from offering a discount on the entire bill amount, when you dine at our partner restaurants, you can also participate in the monthly events that we are going to be organising,” he tells us. The card is priced at Rs 3,000, inclusive of taxes and is valid for a year. You can get one additional add-on card for anyone with the same last name as you.
Host a meal with Once Upon my Kitchen
Not targeted at restaurant dining per se, Once Upon My Kitchen (OUMK) is still an innovative concept. It caters to both, people who want to host a meal, as well as those who are just interested in eating. You can sign up to be a host on their website, set a menu as well as the date, time, venue and price for your gastronomic feast. On the other hand, if you sign up to be a diner, you can see the various menus that are coming up, depending on the schedules that hosts have posted and apply accordingly. However, hosts have the sole power to accept or reject your request. A meal through this interesting enterprise will set you back around Rs 1,000 and you can expect to enjoy a array of diverse Indian and international cuisines.
A surprise meal at the Secret Supper Project
When you visit their website, all you will find is an email id that you can shoot an email to if you want to volunteer to try a meal that is going to surprise both you and your tastebuds, as you won’t even know where or with whom you’re going to be dining. However, we did a little digging around for all you sceptics and found that the group hosts one dinner every month, at an undisclosed location. Spanning across six to eight courses, the experience aims to present its diners with food that is hard to find at restaurants in the city, made with rare ingredients and uncommon recipes from global cuisines. A typical dinner caters to 25-30 people, and the price is Rs 2,000 per head, on an average, which varies depending on the ingredients used in that particular meal.
