Promising young designer Masaba Gupta, daughter of Neena Gupta and cricketer Viv Richards, has styles and designs that are distinctly her own. At only 21, she’s had her own fashion shows and celebrity patrons. It is no wonder that she now has her stand-alone store in the fashion-forward area of Juhu.
The store is spacious and white with a band of shocking pink, the lively collection providing adequate colour. A marble table, a collage of her designs and a flower pot add character to the store while the floor-length mirror makes it look more spacious. The staff is well informed about the fabrics and sizes. And they do not nag you as you shop. Which is a big plus point in our books.
A trend that runs among Masaba’s creations is that they are distinctly desi, the colours are unapologetically bold and bright, while the prints are simple and traditional. Take your pick from combinations such as red and indigo, green with white and purple, and pink and orange. And still, surprisingly enough, nothing is over-the-top. You will find kurtas, churidaar sets, dupattas, sarees, dhotis, tunics, Indian-style gowns and dresses, skirts, ghaghras, cholis, blouses, ponchos, band galas, blouses, angrakhas, shirts and jackets for men, jackets for women, and sets for children. The ballerina set is particularly cute. The embroidery is intricate and mostly in classy gold. Different types of silks and cottons are the dominant fabrics with accents of velour. There are unique silhouettes and styles as well.
The collection is changed 20-25 days and the sizes range from 32 to 38. Accessories such as chunky neck pieces and arm pouches are for `500. Be prepared to shell out at least `2,000 for the clothes. The sarees range from `4,000 – `8,000. For a designer store, it is not frightfully expensive. If you are looking for something exclusive or custom-made, you can fix an appointment as well.
Masaba is definitely a must-visit store for your wedding and party season shopping. Desi is the way to be and you will definitely find something unique that catches your fancy.
