Mourners pay respects to former Iranian leader Rafsanjani
Mourners from all walks of life in Iran from the country's president to passers-by on the street paid their respects today to the late Iranian leader Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani following his death over the weekend at the age of 82. President Hassan Rouhani and his administration visited the mosque in northern Tehran where Rafsanjani's body was brought. Mourners, including Rafsanjani's family members, wept at the sight of his coffin, reaching out to touch it.

Pro-democracy Hong Kong lawmaker condemns ‘violent attacks’
Hong Kong pro-democracy legislator Nathan Law hit out today at "violent attacks" by pro-China protesters at the city's airport on his return from a political forum in Taiwan. Law, 23, encountered the crowd in the arrivals hall late yesterday.

Florida airport gunman set for court hearing
Iraq war vet Esteban Santiago is scheduled to make an initial court appearance today to face charges related to a Florida airport shooting spree that killed five and wounded six. Santiago, 26, flew to the Fort Lauderdale airport on Friday and retrieved a 9mm handgun and ammunition that he had declared and packed in his checked luggage. Santiago, who had previously shown signs of "erratic behavior," allegedly fired his weapon in the busy airport until he ran out of ammunition, then dropped to the ground and peacefully surrendered to a sheriff's deputy, authorities said.

22,000 Rohingya fled Myanmar to Bangladesh in one week: UN
At least 65,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar -- a third of them over the past week -- since the army launched a crackdown in the north of Rakhine state, the UN said today. The figure marks a sharp escalation in the numbers fleeing a military campaign which rights groups say has been marred by abuses so severe they could amount to crimes against humanity. They also come the same day the UN's human rights envoy for Myanmar, Yanghee Lee, began a 12-day visit to probe violence in the country's borderlands that will take her to the army-controlled area.
