A staircase, if you have one, will be an integral part of your home, but that doesn’t mean that it has to be dull or boring. Trisha Ghoroi brings you makeover tips to spruce up your staircase

How we wish we had the magical staircase from Hogwarts, one which could change direction and take us to undiscovered rooms. But alas, our homes aren’t as grand as the castle. The area around your staircase is usually the most boring part of your house; we rarely have any brightness around it. Sometimes there’s a bit of junk stored there, too. But there are ways to make this area the most magical corner of your house and you don’t need a Hogwarts degree to do it. Here are some fun ideas to revamp your staircase.

Killing darkness with light
Light makes everything bright and fun, and there are a number of ways to add some light to your staircase, especially if your staircase isn’t lit by natural light. If your home has modern décor, opt for minimal stair lights at the base of each stair. But if you want a grander feel, install antique sconces giving off dim light. These will not only brighten the area, but also add character to your staircase.

A Memory Wall
This is a fun project, and the best part is that you can always twist photos around to create a new look. All you need to do is get some photo frames of different sizes and hang them on the wall next to the staircase. You can dedicate the wall to a specific family member or even a pet. Start with baby pictures at the base of the staircase with the most recent pictures at the top, going through the years. Another idea is to give it a theme. Just add Christmas photos from each year and voila, your boring staircase is not just fun, but it also tells of a journey.

Quaint little library
If you are a bibliophile, having your own library has probably been a dream for some time. But, finding space to display the books you own can be a daunting task. A good idea is to fix shelves on the wall next to the stairs and stock all your books on them. For a minimal look, opt for floating bookshelves; if you want a grand library, add full-length wooden shelves like the one in Beast’s Castle.

The cupboard under the stairs
There are better uses of the area under the stairs than building a cupboard or using it as storage space. You can set up a desk under the stairs with drawers under low stairs. Roll in a chair and fix up all the necessities, and your personal work station is ready! Alternatively, create a room there for your pet or place furniture for additional sitting space.

Banister makeover
The banister is a functional element of your staircase and often an important one. But, instead of a simple wooden railing, amp it up with some shelves and storage. You can store anything from toys to books, and even wine bottles. It’s not only a smart way to use the space, but it also creates a fun display area. If you don’t like the idea of shelves, install drawers to keep your stuff out of sight. This amounts to, functional use of the staircase.

Give your stairway a memorable makeover
If you’re renovating your staircase, here are a few tips to help you beautify the area.

  • For maximum use of space, turn it into a floating staircase. These stairs are supported by the wall beside them. This will give you more space to work with.
  • For a raw look, make outdoor stairs out of stones instead of bricks and concrete.
  • If you’re short on space, a spiral staircase is the best option. To decorate it, hang a modern chandelier from the ceiling in the centre of the staircase.
