Shoulder-grazing hair and super long bangs are amongst the coolest looks that ‘It girls’ across the world are sporting right now. Komal Soni updates you on the long and short of the latest hairstyle trends

Winter’s here, and what better way to grab eyeballs this season than to flaunt a brand new hairdo? Lucky for you, the new trends in hairstyles have something for every girl. Whether you want to go super short, medium length or long and lustrous, these chic styles have you covered. Take a long, hard look in the mirror, because it’s time to say goodbye to your old locks and hello to one of these head-turning styles. Go on, take your pick from these cool new looks to turn yourself into an instant hottie.

MEDIUM-LENGTH STYLES

Lobby for the lob

The bob was everywhere a few years ago. Now welcome its longer cousin, the lob (or long bob). This one falls at or just below your shoulders and can be worn in multiple fun ways. You can wear it straight and sleek with a centre parting for a neat, polished look, which works well at the office and at the nightclub. Change the parting to a side one and you have a quick glam fix.

Or you can get beachy waves by adding long, staggered layers to your lob, giving it extra texture and bounce. You could even get a lob with choppy, blunt ends if you prefer a boho vibe. Colour the ends a shade lighter than your normal hair to give your locks a sun-kissed feel. And finally, top your lob with eyebrow-long bangs to gain cool-girl credence, and ace two hot hair trends in one fell swoop of the scissors. The lob works for those with thick, wavy hair as well as on girls with super straight, fine hair.

Shake things up with the shag

A throwback to the rockers of the ’70s, the shag usually hits the collarbone, although it can be shoulder-length or longer, too. It has a relaxed silhouette with soft lines and seamless face-framing layers. Girls with curly mops can celebrate because (finally!) here is a style that looks incredible on thick, wavy hair. But, straight haired girls needn’t despair. The shag will give you a flirty edge too.

To get the shag right, make sure that there isn’t too much difference between the longest and the shortest layers. You can wear this low-maintenance style with a fluid fringe, which can be parted any way you like. And, you need not blow dry your shag. It sits just as well if air-dried. In fact, it’s meant to be worn messy to give your hair that sexy, tousled appearance. An outgrown lob can easily be styled into a shag.

SHORT CUTS

Pirouette with the pixie

The cutesy pixie is just what you need this season. It’s playful but also very stylish. This super short crop can be worn with extra long layers at the top and sweeping sideways bangs for a modern, glitzy twist. Or you can go retro and keep it short overall to get a dewy, fresh-faced look.

If opting for the latter, ask your stylist to do a razor cut, since that will lend it a subtle softness. The pixie is perfect for those with straight, floppy hair, but it also works on slightly wavy hair. Curly haired girls might want to think twice before cutting it so short since it will need a lot of upkeep. The pixie is the best bet for girls with oval and symmetrical faces and who have proportionate features.

Go bold and beautiful with a buzz cut

This one’s for the seriously gutsy. It’s a close crop that will entail shedding pretty much the entire length of your locks. A buzz cut is as close as you will ever come to shaving your head, so be prepared for a drastic makeover and what follows. However, a buzz cut screams attitude and will showcase your gorgeous face to the fullest.

Score extra points by colouring your fuzz a metallic gold or silver, or even a pastel pink or lavender. This style is best worn by girls who ooze confidence. Dare if you will...

Bounce around with a bob

The aforementioned bob has made a comeback as well, and it’s much more versatile this time around. It can be worn in a boxy, close-cut, chin-length blunt style with square bangs. Or you could opt for an even shorter, flirty and girly avatar with wispy edges and long, side-swept bangs. Try slicking it back and turning the edges outward for a retro feel. It suits all kind of hair and adds a bounce to fine hair.

LONG HAIR TRENDS

Long and flowing

If you are going long, go super long. Wear your hair waist-length, slick, straight and one-length with tapered, thin ends like the film stars of yore. The thin ends will give it movement and balance the heaviness of the length. If that’s too long for you, go chest-length and add long layers to get a sexy voluminous mane.

To add some drama, top it with long side-swept, angled bangs. You could even go for eye-grazing bangs for a dash of old-world charm, or get blunt ends to give your long hair an edgy, contemporary turn.

Go au naturel

Flaunting the natural texture of your hair without any conditioning or treatment is another trend to follow this season. No more arduous blow drying; go with air-drying for fuss-free hair. Tell your stylist to give you a style that enhances the natural appeal of your hair and minimises — if not eliminates — the use of hair product.

The trend that’s back with a Bang

Bangs are big this season. Long, short, side-swept, square, full or wispy, they’ve taken the world by storm. Getting bangs that graze your eyes can update any hairstyle within seconds. And, it helps that you can play around with them. Pin them up or tuck them under a hair band (pins and hair bands are this season’s must-have hair accessories!) to change up your look. Or change your parting to go from girly to glam. Bangs look great on curly hair as well, lending  a level of mystique as they flirt with your eyes and temples.
