Summer Trends For 2018 Dark Wood And Metallic Accents

Dark wood is making a comeback this summer, in wall cladding, ceilings and even furniture, says designer Ritu Goregaoker

The mid-century modern style has been kicking around for a while and will probably be there for some time. The style has seen a lot of changes within its domain and this year we would probably see  a strong statement made with brass and dark furniture as an interior trend.

To take you through the hot and humid months ahead we suggest a cool muted look with dark wood.  While this dark trend has been bubbling on the back burner, this year it’s ready to take over completely. Gone are the days of blonde woods. Rosewood, Walnut and Mahogany are making their presence felt, Whether it is wall cladding or making a statement with the ceiling, dark wood is the wood of the year. Be it the living room or your bedroom or the study, dark wooden cladding is taking its rightful place.

Apart from wall cladding and ceiling finishes, even furniture is set to head to the dark side. Consoles, coffee tables, sofa trimmings or wardrobes are shedding their light wood facade and taking on moodier palettes of dark wood. 2018 is the year where darker wood tones signify a resurgence for retro glamour combined with bold colours, rich pigments and metallic finishes providing a new take on modern luxe.

Last year the metallic trend started to filter through into paints and metal finishes. The big difference this year is the choice of metallic finish—think less copper and rose gold, and more brass. Brass is the most sophisticated and organic of the metallic colour palette. Softer than silver, it brings its own elegance together with a sense of decadence. You'll see brass detailing like door knobs and handles, brass lamp bases and picture frames.

Brass is back because it evokes that seventies mood, which is back as well. Brass is trendy because it has a warm hue with a vintage retro look and is perfect matched with dark and desaturated hues which are popular in furniture and decor. Nothing spells style and luxury like metallics.  Metallic handles and legs are the perfect finishing touches for an extra glam feel. And a fusion of walnut, gold, brass, black and marble gives a more sophisticated feel. This popular trend has pushed the metal palette into the spotlight—glittery golden tones as well as brass and copper accents exude a refined, polished look that harmonises with a number of styles like classic Victorian, edgy industrial and sleek contemporary interiors.

Curated wood with metallic embellishments are going to become a rage this year as metallics are the perfect partner for dark colour palettes. They brighten the space while maintaining the overall muted vibe.

Another brilliant way to introduce glitz and shine is by using metallic accents in furniture. Burnished bronze inlay on the floor or dining table tops, coffee tables with burnt copper or antique brushed brass legs and accents are pushing through to the forefront. Dark wood wall cladding with an antique finish brass or copper inlay design, wooden Ceilings with burnt gold trimmings... the options are numerous and exciting. To keep the look cohesive, blend it well with elements like the sofa and curtains. When coupled with the right lighting, it can result in a very polished look.

There are many ways you can bring the richness of warm metals in contrast with the gorgeous tones of dark wood into your own home. Bring in elements as small as a trivet with a gold accent, or go big with feature pieces like a dining table. But if you already have existing dark wood pieces, think of small antique gold and burnished brass accents that you can add at minimal cost. Vases, glassware rimmed in gold, tableware, even clocks, and lamps. It's a simple way to add richness and luxe.

Another bifurcation of this trend which is catching up is Distressed Wood and Aged Metal. The mix of distressed wood and aged metal provides texture and character. Both aged wood and aged metal develop beautiful patinas over time. These elements work in many decor styles. Distressed wood and aged metal can take on a grungy, industrial look for a cutting-edge design in a modern urban apartment. The right combination can also be used in a second home somewhere in the mountains, where reclaimed dark wood panelling and flooring settles in with aged brass decor.
