Taking care of your hair is important, but it isn’t always the easiest thing. Pooja Salvi & Khevna Pandit tell you everything there is to know about hair serums
Pollution, sedentary lifestyles, exposure to harsh sun rays, improper haircare and heavy chemicals leave your hair little breathing room. And, while there are plenty of elements that can ruin your hair, taking care of it gets tricky especially when you can’t devote a lot of time to it. Enter hair serums — the easiest way to tackle the several hair problems you face all at once. Read on as we tell you everything there is to know about them.
What are hair serums?
Hair serums are haircare solutions made from silicon and amino acids. Unlike regular hair oils, hair serums do not penetrate your hair follicles. Instead, they only coat the surface of your hair, protecting it from getting tangled and imparting shine and lustre to your mane. Apart from this, serums also protect your hair from the damage that is done by overexposure to the sun and harmful, chemical-based hair styling products. Primarily used for frizzy and dry hair, hair serums protect hair that is weak or that has undergone harsh chemical treatments.
How to use serums
Most people use hair serums as a preventive measure against dry and damaged hair and to protect it from dust and humidity. Regardless of why you want to use them, here are a few things you should remember when you’re using them.
Make sure you don’t rub the serum into your scalp — comb it lightly through your hair using a comb or your fingers.
If you think the hair serum is making your hair unusually dry, switch brands. It is possible that the product type does not suit your hair type. Sometimes the brand may also help.
Match your other hair products. Your shampoo, conditioner and hair serum should go well together in order for them to work in your favour. If one doesn’t match the other, it could adversely affect the condition of your hair.
Do not apply hair serums when your hair is dripping wet. Only apply them when your hair is damp or once you’ve towel-dried it.
Remember not to overuse hair serums. It’s important to wash your hair between applications or it can lead to greasy or damaged hair.
