MIND OVER MATTER

I have been working at an advertising agency for the past four years now. In my time here, I have seen several employees leave for better opportunities. The friends that I had made in my initial years of working here aren’t with me anymore. I now work with a new team and, to be honest, they are not the friendliest. I don’t expect my work zone to be a ball of fun all the time, but these people are making it difficult for me to even focus. They are constantly gossiping and spreading rumours about me. I try not to mix my personal and professional life, but that’s getting difficult. Please help!
– Suhani Shah, Kandivali

Dear Suhani,
Office rumours, gossip and office politics are inevitable in any organisation. Have you tried talking to your colleagues to find out what the matter is and why they are behaving this way with you? If you have already tried sorting things out, you should approach your company’s HR or your team leader with your concerns. Don’t ‘rat’ on your colleagues, but if this is hindering your work, your superiors should be in the loop. However, at the same time, don’t let this bother you too much. Work hard at your job and don’t mingle too much with this crowd. They will soon be on their way too, according to what you’ve mentioned.
