A Complicated Conundrum

Hi, I am a 24-year-old woman working as a school teacher and have been teaching nursery children for the last two years. Besides being a teacher, I am also pursuing a Diploma to move up in my career. Although the salary is low right now, I am very happy and keen on making a bright career out of it for myself. But having said that, I feel left out, as my life revolves completely around the children, the school and my home life. It seems as though I have no social life at all. My friends are not only earning more than me, but are also enjoying life to the fullest. Should I change the field that I am working in or should I seek better opportunities as a school teacher by continuing to work in the same field? I am confused! Can you guide me about my next move?

Dear Meagan,

It’s alright to be a bit confused as you are. While you are happy being a teacher, you feel as though you should be competing with your friends — to earn more and have a social life. You need to introspect a little about what you want to do in life. While it’s important to have a social life, it is also important to be happy with what you’re doing. And, it seems that you are not only enjoying your work but that you also want to have a long and successful career in your field. So what’s stopping you from flying like a free bird? Shed your inhibitions and fear, and take hold of your opportunities to give your career the boost it needs. Be bold and take the next step with what you like doing. When it comes to your social life, it will happen. It’s just a matter of time before you strike the right balance between the two.
