'Would love to play a nasty yet comic villain': Bharti Singh

By Chaitanya Padukone

With her sense of perfect timing, quirky wit and spontaneity, TV star-stand-up comedienne-actress-dancer-TV show hostess Bharti Singh has carved a precious place for herself in the hearts of millions of Indian TV addicts. Not only does she excel at making home-audiences laugh, the roly-poly versatile Bharti also proved to be pretty tough and daring when despite a ligament-tear injury, she qualified for the Grand Finale of ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi-Season 9’ (Colors) which just concluded. Currently, the exuberant Bharti is among the team of dynamic five participants in this kaafi-hatke reality comedy show ‘Khatra Khatra Khatra’ co-produced by her writer-husband Harsh Limbachhiya. The family-entertainer show which started telecast on March 11th, will now air on Colors TV every Monday to Friday at 6:00 pm. The Afternoon D&C cornered the chatter-box Bharti for a vibrant chat. Excerpts:

What should home-audiences expect from your new production baby ‘KKK’?
Dekhenge, sunenge, hassenge, enjoy karenge--- aur kya! (chuckles). This Colors TV comedy-reality show ‘Khatra Khatra Khatra’ is actually like our new born masti-khor screen-baby because my husband Harsh Limbachhiya and I have both nurtured it and seen it being delivered to the home-viewers. In fact Harsh is also one of the partners-in-comic-crime along with Vikas Gupta, the gorgeous Ridhima Pandit and Aly Goni and of course me. We will also have dhamaal participation by noted TV celebs like stalwart Usha Nadkarni , suave Aditya Narayan, and the vivacious Anita Hassanandani.

Tell us what is the anokhi khaas baat of the show?
We are five popular TV celeb faces who will feature in this hilarious show based on the concept of embarrassing dares and one-upmanship. The contestants engage in a cat ’n’ mouse chase of unpredictable situations. Every episode will see one of the five celebrities assume the role of the anchor and challenger who sets bizarre or even khatarnaak tasks for the rest. No matter how ‘embarrassing’, every contestant must outwit each other and complete an indoor as well as an outdoor task. The contestant adjudged as the ‘loser’ must face a big punishment. What’s exciting is the fact that the losing contestant can even convince their fans in the studio-audience to take the punishment on his behalf.

Isn’t it a little similar to the popular TV show ‘MTV Bakra’?
It’s exclusive and very different. Here we do not ‘target’ the unsuspecting aam-aadmi public walking or driving on the road. It’s all only amongst the fabulous five celeb contestants. Here the contestant are facing the ‘khatra’ of becoming the ‘bakraa’.

What is the major challenge for you on this show?
The fact that I am playing ‘myself’ and not some character. Like in Kapil Sharma’s comedy show I am ‘acting‘ as this dim-witted, blunt married ghar-walli ‘Titli-bhabhi’. Secondly, I will be playing nasty pranks on my own husband Harsh as well on this show and he will also give it back to me. Hamare show mein ‘kucch bhi ho sakta hai’, so I am alert all the time. Although it is a scripted show there are lots of sudden ad-lib improvisations.

Surely you may be having ‘big-screen’ cinema roles on your secret wish-list?
Of course, why not! I would love to co-star with Bachchan-saab, Ranveer Singh, SRK, Akshay Kumar in movies, preferably in well-defined striking roles. Currently all my shooting dates are allocated only to TV shows. Someday, in future I would also love to play a nasty grey-shades filmy role with comic shades.
