We have gone 'all out' to present a crazy cocktail of cricket and comedy: Sunil Grover

By Chaitanya Padukone

Par excellence TV comedian and amazing actor Sunil Grover, who is still remembered for hilarious TV screen-avataars such as the witty dehati behenji ‘Gutthi’  and  as the  eccentric ‘quack-medico’ ‘Dr. Mashoor Gulati’  and the querulous ‘Rinku-bhabhi’, went on a self-imposed long sabbatical. After performing in a couple of Hindi movies and for various ‘live’ shows, the exuberant ‘mimic’ Grover is back with his latest digital-web comedy series Jio ‘Dhan Dhana Dhan’ Live which will streamed on MyJio and JioTV app   at 7.30 pm and 11 pm and will also be aired on Colors TV ( Sat-Sun 11 pm) . The enterprising sister-duo Neeti and Preeti Simoes are producing the web show in partnership with Frames Production.  Afternoon D & C connected with the smart-witted Sunil Grover for a conversation. Excerpts:

Okay, tell us what ‘Jio-Dhan Dhana Dhan’ is all about?
This hilarious one-of-its-kind unique live web and TV show will blend together the  worlds of cricket and comedy together like a crazy ‘cocktail’, during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) matches this month and the next. You must also observe that our catchy title has ‘Ha, Ha, Ha’ merged in each of the three words ( chuckles).

Did you have to acquire ‘extra-gyaan’ on cricket intricacies ?
No, not really. Whatever basic knowledge of cricket I already have, is as good as the popular awareness all cricket crazy fans have.

What is the ‘khaas baat’ of your character ‘Prof. LBW’ and that played by  Shilpa?
‘LBW’ stands for ‘Launda Bhatinde Wala’ (wears a wicked smile) while my vivacious screen-wife Shilpa Shinde (the ‘Bigg Boss-11’ winner and ex-‘Angoori Bhabhi-ji’) is called ‘Mrs.Googly-Devi’.  Right from day-one, charming Shilpa and I have been sharing a warm chemistry on the sets . She has a terrific sense of comic timing and high levels of energy.

Any fond memories of your cricket-playing as a youngster ?
So many,  but one ‘nishaani’ that has stayed till now is my partially broken front tooth, while trying to catch the speeding ball hit by the batsman (chuckles).

Aren’t you apprehensive of competition from your rival comedy shows?
No, not at all. The more 'hansi-mazaak' shows, the merrier. In this hectic hi-tech stressful age, we need hilarious stress-busters on TV for home-audiences. While watching our funny shows the entire family laughs together and forgets their nagging tensions. It has been proved that hearty laughter is the best medicine for good health.

What is the kind of ‘celebs-ensemble’ in your show?
It’s quite impressive.  Apart from both Shilpa and me,  there will be the extraordinary versatile actor Ali Asgar, ace mimic  Sugandha Mishra, Suyyash Rai, Paresh Ganatra and Suresh Menon who all will be responsible for the comic punches and gags. From the world of cricket,  stalwarts like Kapil Dev, Ajay Jadeja  and possibly Virendra Sehwag etc. will interact with me and Shilpa and with  dynamic  anchors debonair Samir Kochhar, Archana Vijaya and Shibani Dandekar.

Since your ‘forte’ has been playing an ‘effeminate’ character draped in ‘drag’, do we also get to see you in ‘female’ avataars in Jio-D-3?
Surely, my loyal fans will enjoy, whenever I play the funny character of a ‘bholi-bhaali’ naïve female called ‘Sudha’ who dreams of  becoming a ‘cheer-leader’. Keep watching--there are lots of surprise-twists in store.
