My role is brazenly bold yet ‘beauty-ful’: Renee Dhyani

Ravishing Renee Dhyani  (of ‘MTV Roadies’ fame) who made waves with her negative role in ‘Kasam Tere Pyar Ki’ is known for her tough, tomboyish overtures. Currently the adventurous actress has been singled out to play the role of a raunchy, bossy sex-worker called Beauty in Zee TV’s latest bold yet inspiring fiction offering — ‘Yeh Teri Galiyaan’. The ongoing show, has Kolkata’s red-light district ‘Sonagachi’ as its back-drop and has a strong social message. ‘Yeh Teri Galiyan’ (YTG) is being aired on Zee TV, every Monday to Friday in the early prime time 7.00 pm slot. Afternoon DC had a candid conversation with the articulate Renee, on what made her select this unconventional, bold subject. Excerpts:

What is the response to your  bold, brazen  screen-character in ‘YTG’?
Overall, the audience response  and the reactions from my loyal fans is very positive to my negative-shades character called Beauty. There is a section of viewers who may be hating my sadistic sex-worker character, but I take that as a disguised compliment for my convincing performance (smiles). Behind the wicked mask, there is also my emotional sensitivity.

Were you initially hesitant to accept this raunchy role?
By nature,  I am a very high-energy level person (like maybe Ranveer Singh). Initially I was a  bit skeptical because it had negative shades. But then I realised that this was a daring yet  unconventional TV show and unique character which would give me super scope for performance.  In fact, I considered myself lucky that both Cinevistaas and Zee TV considered me the right choice for this ‘dumdaar’ role of  the  scheming Beauty. Negative roles not only have great impact, but they also have a long-term recall value. What also motivated me was that ‘YTG’ is basically a sensitive love story between the lead characters Puchki and Shantanu.

The challenges you faced in the prep for this oomph-oozing character …
As part of my prep I went for recce-trips around the ‘Sonagachi’ areas and from a distance carefully observed  the sex-workers. Being a staunch North Indian,  speaking  phrases in Bengali in the right accent , looking alluring yet not vulgar and cheap are among the challenges. The loud aggressive stance and fiery, curt-blunt dialogues at times makes me trip into a mental black-out. But I am always putting in my best with vital support from the cast and crew and improvisations.

You seem to be pretty ‘rough n tough’ in real life, isn’t it?
Haanjee, with a fauji family background, I have been brought up more like a son. Riding motor-cycles is my passion and I have also been badly injured. That’s how I also enjoyed being a part of the rugged ‘Roadies’ TV show  and even ‘Bigg Boss-8’ as a ‘wild card’ entrant.

Which reality TV show is on your secret wish-list?
Since I am a trained Kathak dancer (under the Birju Maharaj gharana) I would love to be a contestant in a leading dance reality show. Viewers would surely be thrilled to check me out in various graceful and groovy dance forms. Working with Shah Rukh Khan in a Bollywood movie is also my secret dream ambition (blushes).
