By Chaitanya Padukone

Many years ago, vivacious model-TV star Asha Negi won the ‘Uttarakhand Beauty Queen’ crown and soon she began her conquest in Mumbai’s Tellywood (TV industry). Besides proving her impressive acting talents in a string of TV shows including Ekta Kapoor’s ‘Pavitra Rishta’ and ‘Bade Achhe Lagte Hain’ she excelled in reality shows as well. With her agile dancing calibre, she won the Indian dance reality show ‘Nach Baliye-6’ along with her partner Rithvik Dhanjani (her current boyfriend) in 2014 and the following year she even made it to the final round of the ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi’ (2015). The versatile Negi has now entered the OTT digital zone in this ALT Balaji finite web-show ‘Baarish’ which has already started streaming. The Afternoon D&C cornered the exuberant Asha for a tete-a-tete. Excerpts:

It’s drizzling in your career during the April-May scorching summer heat?
(Laughs). Isn’t that a welcome relief on-screen for both the ardent web-watchers and also for us -- the cast of ‘Baarish’. Rains have always played a romantic catalyst in hundreds of our Bollywood movies, but this time it’s happening in a web-series where Sharman Joshi and I are several others are featuring.

What is ALT Balaji’s ‘Baarish’ all about?
An engaging simple feel-good story minus the explicit erotica normally seen in most web-series. A filthy rich Gujju diamond-merchant (Sharman Joshi) meets a Marathi girl Gauravi (that’s me), a simple woman who is good at speaking English. In fact, she is an efficient employee (a sales-girl) in his organization. Both of them bond over vadaa paav and garam chaai on the streets during the drizzling Mumbai rains. Vaisay bhi, when I wish to enjoy, I love getting wet in the rains especially when it’s hot. This time my fans will see me managing to speak Marathi phrases in my dialogues to go with my character.

What else….
Gauravi (that’s me) likes a simple life without any miracles and accidents. For her, perfection lies in imperfection and relationships are best when they are imperfect. Eventually, these two different yet similar individuals fall in love and get married. But like every love story, it is not a rosy path ahead but there are thorny patches as well. Also our trending ‘Baarish’ trailer has a cliffhanger ending, as Gauravi is shown getting arrested by the police.

How is your experience working with co-actor Sharman?
Undoubtedly, it’s an honour to share screen-space with him. Over the years, I have watched and admired Sharman Joshi in most of his Bollywood movies including the iconic mega-hit ‘3 Idiots’. Incidentally, he will make his debut in the OTT digital web-zone with this show opposite me. Don’t go by his innocent looks, Sharman is quite a naughty prankster on the sets. We share a warm on-screen chemistry.

After excelling in acting, dancing, daring adventure, hosting—what next on your wish-list?
Hmm, I would love to learn singing, because it’s a stress-buster. In fact I had even hosted ‘Indian Idol (2015). Given a chance I would also love to work opposite Ranbir Kapoor in a Hindi movie (blushes), although I know I will be awe-struck initially.

Any plans to tie the nuptial knot with your long-time partner Rithvik?
It will happen someday. We are both busy with our respective careers and there are no immediate plans as of now to plunge into matrimony.
