In keeping with their commitment to home-audiences of providing decent, enlightening, path-breaking yet entertaining TV content, the pioneer Channel Zee TV has now come up with a new family-centric daily soap titled ‘Rajaa Betaa’. Offering an unusual twist, the intriguing theme of this TV show is that out here ‘a grown-up orphan now adopts the family’, which had originally adopted him as a little child. ‘Rajaa Betaa’ has premiered from 15th January, and will be aired every Monday to Saturday at 6.30 pm on Zee TV. The show has a promising lead pair played by web-series sensation, handsome hunk Rrahul Sudhir opposite the dainty, charming Odiya film-actress Sambhabana Mohanty, who makes her telly debut. The Afternoon D&C connected with the effervescent Sambhabana for a candid chat. Excerpts:

Being a hero-centric TV show what motivated you to take up this offer?
Well, I always wanted to explore myself as an actor through the medium of television and I am excited to be a part of a Zee show like ‘Rajaa Betaa’. I essay the character of ‘Poorva’, an independent, frank and strong-willed woman who abides by her principles and loves her family. What drew me to the show was its concept and off-beat storyline that breaks the myths surrounding the male in our social system. It is not always, that only the saasu-maa or the daadi-maa emotionally binds the entire family together. Actually, I have a lot in common with my screen-character ‘Poorva’ (laughs).

 What else…?
‘Rajaa Betaa’ explores the journey of an orphan who is adopted into a family much against the wishes of his own foster father and as a result, grows up in a negative environment with cynical, fault-finding family members who do not truly consider him their own. But holding on to the strings of affection that came his way from his foster grandparents, he stays positive and emerges to be a man of character, constantly giving back to a family he feels forever indebted to them for lending him their surname. Now his grown-up character (Vedant Tripathi played by Rrahul Sudhir) is a successful practicing gynecologist doctor.

Since you are highly qualified in academics were you disinterested in showbiz?
That’s quite true. My prime focus being academic studies where I even completed my M.Phil, I was never overtly inclined towards facing the camera. But then I guess, destiny hijacked me into movies. It was all unplanned, incidental and experimental. But I was a good observer whenever there would be filmy discussions at home. Why I got myself oriented with classical music singing under a Guru, but could not complete the formal training course. When I saw myself on-screen for the first time I somehow realized that maybe I should dabble with showbiz in Mumbai. Some people even feel I have a fleeting jhalak of actress Jayaprada during her younger days.

Any reality TV show on your wish-list?
Hmmm, actually none of them. However, if there is a singing reality show on the lines of ‘Jhalak Dikhla Jaa’; where I could be diligently trained by a composer-singer-Guru, I would love to compete in that.

Who would be your ‘dream-hero’ if you get to work in a Bollywood movie?
Hrithik Roshan! I adore him ever since I watched him in ‘Kaho Naa Pyar Hai’. Honestly, I wish I get to meet him personally and maybe also share screen-space with him.
