In the reality talent-hunt TV show India’s Next Superstars (2018), besides the two supreme winners, it was the vivacious Shruti Sharma who grabbed the ‘Special Mention Award’. The talented actress Shruti has now bagged the lead role as a gritty IPS police officer in the Colors TV show ‘Gathbandhan’ which has a maverick action-packed yet romantic subject. The engaging show which has handsome actor Abrar Qazi playing local gangster ‘Raghu-Dada’ premiered on 15th January and will air on Colors every Monday to Friday at 9:00 p.m. The Afternoon D&C connected with Shruti for a lively chat. Excerpts:

Although a winner of the ‘Superstars’ show, what made you opt for this TV assignment instead of grabbing a movie?
Obviously movies are on my wish-list and I consider myself so lucky that I got to interact with judges Karan Johar-sir and Rohit Shetty-sir and also learn so much from them. Honestly, I am an ardent TV shows-addict and I have loved to watch crime-thrillers. As long as I get to showcase my acting talent in a lead role, I have no hang-ups about acting in TV shows. Since I do not have a filmy family background, TV shows would be my stepping stone to movies. In fact I have also acted in a Telugu movie where I played a ‘detective’.

What’s so amazing about ‘Gathbandhan’?
It’s something so different—yet fascinating. An edgy yet captivating love saga from the streets of Dashrath chawl in Mumbai. The ‘dumdaar’ show in a frothy, light-hearted manner will trace the journey of two contrasting personalities who under unusual circumstances are tied in a bond , or rather handcuffed, for lifetime (laughs.)

Is it tough, playing a ‘pretty tough’ IPS police officer?
Once I wear the smart-khaki uniform, I derive that martial attitude feel and become the tough-talking IPS officer Dhanak with a stern-look. My close friend who is training as a ‘Black Cat Commando’ also guides me. My dream is to be the ‘Lady Singham’ of Colors channel. But at the same time she has this emotional side to her when she falls madly in love with a contrasting personality—that of a ruffian, gangster Raghu (played by actor Abrar Qazi). Although Raghu is a brash, gangster, he also has a kind heart when he helps the needy and those in distress.

Please continue…
My character Dhanak is an idealistic young girl, who sees the world as black and white and is determined to bring a drastic change in society. Her life changes when she learns that her husband Raghu is anything but moral. What happens next, in ‘Gathbandhan’ is full of dramatic twists and turns.

Where do the conflicting clashes arise?
Raghu takes over the family business of extortion. As both of us enter the bond of matrimony, a conflict of epic proportions gradually ensues between the bossy matriarch saasu-maa Savitri (played by Sonali Naik) and her new policewali bahurani (that’s me).

Any secret wish list that you would like to reveal?
I really wish to work under my favourite ‘showman’director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, even a passing close-up shot in his movies.would be dream-come-true. Also,  I have this dream to share screen-space with my favourite hero Ranbir Kapoor - I still have a huge crush on him.
