'My connect with the masses will happen with my debut TV show': Chitrangda Singh

By Chaitanya Padukone

With her ravishing looks and svelte shapely figure, Bollywood model-turned-lead actress Chitrangda Singh has been making waves in movies, for her histrionics ever since she made her striking debut in Sudhir Mishra’s ‘Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi’ ( 2005). Years later, she even flaunted her oomph-oozing agile dancing skills in sultry item-songs like ‘Aao Raja’ in  the Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘Gabbar Is Back’.  Known for her uncanny resemblance to the iconic ‘late’ actress Smita Patil, which she considers a ‘huge compliment’ , Chitrangda ( now a film-producer as well) has now made her debut-foray into reality television. She is among the three judges ( besides choreographer Marzi Pestonji and film director Siddharth Anand ) on this popular dance reality show ‘DID’ Li’l Masters’ being telecast on Zee TV, every Saturday and Sunday at 9pm. The Afternoon DC connected with the effervescent yet candid Chitrangda.

Isn’t it intriguing that the ‘late’ Smita Patil was originally a Doordarshan TV Channel ‘news-anchor’ before getting into movies, whereas you made your mark as a noted Bollywood actress before your debut as a reality Zee TV show ‘judge’?
Oh is it, that’s really interesting. What a phenomenal versatile actress, Smita-ji was and she continues to be an inspiration.

Surely you would got many other TV offers, so why this dance reality show debut?
That’s right, I did get several offers earlier to ‘judge’ comedy TV  shows, but somehow I could not connect with them. When this Zee ‘Li’l Masters offer came to me I was like really enthusiastic . That’s because ever since I was a kid,  I love dancing, it’s a passion,  and I also did get to learn ‘Kathak’ as a school-student. Secondly I enjoy interacting with talented young kids, it’s so delightful and de-stressing. In movies I haven’t really been able to explore my dancing potential to the fullest, except for those ‘one-off’ song-dance rare situations.

Was there any other reason for you to grab this TV assignment?
Frankly, almost every actor or actress loves the ‘mass-connect’ which only a popular TV show can provide. Even leading film-stars go out of their way, to promote their upcoming movies mostly on high-TRPs reality TV shows. Since I didn’t have any movie releasing in the coming months, I felt, this widely-watched ‘DID’ dance show would help in connecting me with the masses and my ardent loyal fans.

Don’t you feel it’s quite ‘stressful’ eliminating sensitive kids from the show?
Maybe it’s a bit grueling, since it’s my first outing on TV. One has to be impartial yet sensitive in communicating disheartening decisions to kids in a positive, polite, endearing way, that doesn’t demoralise them. In real-life too, I am a mother, so I know how kids can be  ‘touchy’. Honestly, today’s children ( ‘blockbuster bachhe’, as they are tagged)  are smart, intelligent and know that they are into ‘healthy competition’. For them, and their doting parents, the coveted Zee TV platform for opportunity, where they get instant national fame,  itself matters a lot.
What ‘X-factor’ would you be judging when the kids are dancing?
The technical aspects would be the job of my co-judge,  eminent choreographer Marzi Pestonji, it will literally be his ‘marzee’ ( laughs) Whereas I would be coming in an experienced ‘actress’ and checking out the overall  ‘performance’ factor and the emotional connect it has with me. For me, it’s been a heart-warming, humbling yet enjoyable experience.

Last year,  you played the on-screen  ‘judge’ of a dancing reality show in the Tiger Shroff starrer movie ‘Munna Michael’ . Your comments?
Hey, that’s a complete incredible coincidence. Here, now I am playing the judge in real-life as well. Guess, it was all destined. (laughs).
