My bold bio reveals my reality journey – from Karenjit to Sunny: Sunny Leone

By Chaitanya Padukone

No prizes for guessing, that  Karenjit Kaur Vohra happens to be the sensational Sunny Leone’s bonafide name, since birth. As is commonly known, Sunny is an Indian-Canadian actor and a former adults intimate content star. Seven years ago, the winsome voluptuous actress first made her mass-connect in India, with the immensely popular TV reality show Bigg Boss, hosted by Salman Khan. During the show, veteran ‘star-maker’ Mahesh Bhatt offered to cast her in his daughter Pooja Bhatt’s ‘Jism 2’ (2012). The rest, as they say, is history. Apart from being a prolific Bollywood actress with stunning looks and an oomph-oozing raunchy ’item-dancer’, Sunny has also been hosting popular TV reality shows. The sultry Sunny has now shot for this ‘original’ content web-series ‘Karenjit Kaur’ – The Untold Story’, directed by ( noted Bollywood movies director ) Aditya Datt which will be available for viewing on-line from July 16, on the digital platform ‘Zee 5 Originals’, helmed by the innovative Amit Goenka and dynamic ZEE 5 CEO Tarun Katial. Afternoon D & C conversed with the exuberant Sunny. Excerpts.

What should the digital viewing audience expect to watch in your web show?
This Zee 5’Originals web series titled ‘Karenjit Kaur – The untold story of Sunny Leone’ will showcase my roller-coaster journey from the American adult film zone to becoming an overnight Bollywood sensation. The content would also reveal the secret behind my stage name ‘Sunny.’ In certain sequences, I will myself re-enact my own life and give my legion of fans and viewers, realistic glimpses of my life.

Would there be an undercurrent of sizzling  glamour?
Everyone insists that there is inherent glamour in my face and my physical aura-persona (switche on a sunny smile). This bold bio-pic has been aesthetically shot, because I have a massive number of young fans as well. In fact there are several  heart-rending emotional scenes. The web-series would  be a startling eye-opener for star-aspirants, that there is so much of struggle, blood, sweat and tears and constant diligent hard work behind the glitter-glamour mask.

Were you apprehensive when you were offered your own bio-pic on ‘Zee 5’?
On the contrary I found it great, exciting yet intriguing. However, when we actually started shooting, it struck me that I was not emotionally prep-ready. It was a tough task, a real challenge for me, reacting to some really emotional and traumatic flash-back moments in my past life. Recreating the entire ‘realistic action-replay’ was not at all easy.

Any particular scenes on the sets of your bio that proved to be a challenge?
There were several of them that were demanding and difficult. Especially the scene where I confide with my parents as to what I did and then I see my father feeling shattered and sobbing. Unable to handle the high intensity of emotions, even I was sobbing. Fortunately, my doting husband Daniel Weber was present on the sets and he consoled me. Now that both my parents have passed away, the scenes were all the more agonizing.

Your ethnic ‘item-laavni’ dance in Marathi movie ‘Boyz’ was a sensation!
The fabulous audience response, was very heartening for me. It was a major unconventional challenge because I was  clad in a nine-yards sari and gyrating to a tribute-fusion-remix of a hit retro song (‘Kuthe Kuthe Zaayacha’) to which the iconic living legend Rekha had danced, way back in 1980.

Will your three little cherubic kids (Nisha, Asher and Noah) form part of the bio-pic?
(Smiles with a twinkle in her eyes). At least not in the very first season. Maybe they would feature in the upcoming next seasons. That too, after we figure out the responses and take a joint call with the production house and the ‘Zee 5’ Channel.
