Under the brilliant baton of iconic composer A R Rahman, the feisty folk-singer, classical, playback n pop-singer Richa Sharma made waves with her duet song ‘Ni Main Samajh Gayi’ in ‘Taal’ (1999). Two decades later, ‘melody-queen’ Richa reigns on the music scene either as a super-singer, a performer or as a judge. Having judged the regular Sa Re Ga Ma Pa which concluded recently, charismatic Richa is now one of the three judges on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa –Li’l Champs again on Zee. The widely-watched pioneer reality musical show for youngsters will premiere this Saturday (Feb 9 ) at 9 p.m, and will air on Zee every Saturday and Sunday at the same time-slot. The Afternoon D&C cornered the outspoken Richa for a chat. Excerpts:

Not just the previous ‘SRGMP’ show, you are the ‘repeat value’ judge in the SRGMP Li’l kids as well! Your comments?
All thanks to Zee TV. My achhi kismat, and the love and support of all my fans As they also say, ‘show-show pe likkha hai ‘judge’ karnewale ka naam’ (laughs). Judging the previous SRGMP was a special journey for me. Hardly did I bid farewell, I am already on board the SRGMP Li’l Champs.

You seem so excited being part of the SRGMP Li’l kids as a co-judge….
That’s because I am delighted being proactively associated with this singing reality show, which focuses on making vocal music the main ‘key catalyst’ of our kid participants. We want to restore their innocence and groom them to nurture their musical abilities. It’s such an honour for me to share the judges’ panel with my dearest buddy eminent singer Shaan and popular composer-singer Amaal Mallik. In fact I totally identify with the show-theme this time of #MusicSe BaddhengeHum.

Judging sensitive competing kids is so challenging, isn’t it?
Honestly, I never consider anything as a hindrance in my life. Surely one has to have that natural knack to sensitively handle children and ensure that they are not dejected, especially when they have to be ‘dropped’ from the next round. Fortunately, I have always hit it off with all my young little nephews and nieces and kids of friends, even in real life. Like it was with legendary Kishore-da, there is a young natkhat child within me, so I am able to connect with children very easily. As they say ‘dil toh bachcha hai ji’.

Please continue…
Fortunately, today’s young generation is not only high-tech-savvy, but they are intelligent enough to understand that ‘the best talent marches ahead’. For these enthusiastic kids and their doting parents, it’s also the sheer joy of participation and enjoying nationwide popularity-exposure of their X-factor, which the Zee TV platform provides. Besides, there is a pardey-ke-peechey dedicated Zee crew-creative team which is training the kids and honing their vocal potential.

Reality shows, ‘live’ concerts, hit playback songs, what next on your ‘singles’ scores?
Oh yeah, I have recorded my ‘singles’. One of them a breezy track with a different feel has already been shot in Los Angeles and a lively ghazal has been picturised at an exotic Lake Muskoka location in Canada, where I am in a cruising boat.
