CID will always remain a benchmark in crime-thrillers TV history: Shivaji Satam

Thursday, November 01, 2018

Previous and current generations of crime-thriller TV show addicts both seem to be sentimentally disheartened. That’s because after 20 years, they may no longer be able to watch ‘ACP Pradyuman’ on ‘CID’, ominously shaking his thumb and index finger delivering his famous one-liner ‘Kuchch toh gadbad hai’!  The longest running widely-watched crime-centric TV show (20 years) has been ‘pulled off air’ by the channel. Off-screen, versatile senior theatre and film actor and TV superstar Shivaji Satam is a far cry from his intimidating image as the stern, investigating ‘ACP Pradyuman’.  With his witty sense of humour, the unassuming Shivaji can make you laugh with his candid punch-lines. Chaitanya Padukone from The Afternoon D&C connected with the suave Shivaji for a grilling sawaal-jawaab. Excerpts:

You must be emotionally disturbed with the ‘CID-goes-off-air’ sad news ?
Yes of course, one is upset especially because it has happened too abruptly. All of us--the entire ‘CID’ cast and our large unit-crew were all taken aback with this rattling bolt-from-the-blue. The entire ‘CID’ unit was like my ‘extended family’ for the past 20 years.

Isn’t there a possibility of returning with a bang, after a long break?
As the adage goes, ‘never say never’! Although there are assurances that a renewed season in a reinvented format is in the offing, one is not too sure if the Channel would want us back. We weren’t even officially informed in advance, that it's going off air. As of now, we are no longer shooting for ‘CID’ that’s finally confirmed. All the same, our entire team including me is immensely grateful to the esteemed Sony Channel for their past support. Currently, I have been shooting for Saleel Kulkarni’s Marathi movie ‘Wedding-cha Shinema’. Life must go on .

What about your massive loyal fan-following ?
Just as we are missing shooting for our shows, lakhs of our loyal loving fans both from the previous generation and today’s young generation will definitely miss their favourite crime-thriller ‘CID’ TV. Undoubtedly, under the overall direction of B P Singh our slick crime-thriller show ‘CID’ was, is and will remain a bench-mark of supreme-quality family entertainment. There are instances of frenzied fans going berserk after hearing the sad news and a passionate fan who even scratched and inscribed ‘CID’ in blood on his bleeding arm. Wherever I go, I have both exuberant young kids and anxious senior citizens mobbing me and demanding to know, when they will see me, ‘Abhijeet’ and ‘Daya’ back in action. Even superstars Salman Khan and Aamir Khan are ardent fans of our ‘CID’ show

In real-life you prefer casual, comfy outfits in sheer contrast to the trendy, formal suits that your character ‘ACP Pradyuman’ wears?
That’s so true. I love to wear smart casual khakis or pastel colour t-shirts or shirts and slip-on footwear. It’s only for the ‘CID’ show that I need to have an up-market dashing suited-booted-tie look (chuckles). As is known, the Crime Branch or Special Branch detection Officers are invariably in ‘mufti’ and not in uniform.

What are your other passions besides acting ?
Playing on the pitch and watching ‘live’ cricket, listening to golden-era retro melodies of legendary Asha-Tai and Lata-Didi and other iconic singers.. Playing cricket with both my grown-up talented sons Abhijeet and Aniruddha also in the same team, would give me a euphoric high. Among the retro crime-thriller movies, I love to watch are those directed by Vijay ‘Goldie’ Anand like ‘Teesri Manzil’, ‘Jewel Thief’ and ‘Johnny Mera Naam’ ( smiles ).
