‘Am an actress only on-screen and ‘not’ in real-life’: Anangsha Biswas

Tall, sensuous, svelte model-actress Anangsha Biswas, who is rather media-shy, has preferred to keep a low-key, letting her versatile work speak for itself. Essentially a trained theatre-drama passionate artiste, Anangsha has acted in Hindi movies and will now be seen in various digital web-series . Currently, two of her prestigious projects, the volatile ‘Mirzapur’ (directed by Gurmmeet Singh) and the brazenly, bold ‘Ashcharya F**k It’ (directed by Samit Kakkad) are on the verge of release. Afternoon D&C connected with the erudite, articulate Anangsha, trying to unravel the ‘mystique aura’ that surrounds her.

Two of your big-time digital releases this month—are you ready?
It’s super-exciting, also makes one a bit tense, even as one awaits audience feedback. While ‘Mirzapur’ is backed by the prestigious Excel Entertainment banner and Amazon Prime Video, the other Yoodlee Films venture ‘Ashcharya F**k It ‘ is releasing on Netflix. Then I also have Sudhir Mishra’s upcoming project ‘Hostages’.

What is so challenging about the screen-characters you are playing?
Interestingly, whatever characters, I am playing are in sheer contrast to my real-life persona. In guns-and-ganglords-centric web-series ‘Mirzapur’, I play this small-town popular song-dance entertainer ‘Zarina’. Since I am also a trained Kathak dancer, I was able to execute the dances with aplomb. It has twists of grey manipulative shades—appearances are deceptive, aren’t they? (smiles).

You didn’t have inhibitions performing the bold, brazen scenes in ‘Ashcharya F**k It’ ?
It’s not a big deal for me, I have my comfort and confidence with my body. My character ‘Latika’ is an ‘NSD’ gold-medallist and as an ambitious newcomer actress, who is hell-bent on becoming a ’super-star’. For an actor, a scene is a scene ,whether it has an undercurrent of erotica or not. Simply because one is performing that ‘character’ convincingly. But such scenes should be shot aesthetically. Actually, I am a dedicated actress ‘on-screen’, but not in real-life. Pretence is not my cup of tea. If I am not comfortable and feel that the intimate or dare-bare skin-show is ‘contrived’ and not essential to the script, I may also decline to do that scene.

Aren’t you open to offers from regular TV shows and reality TV series ?
Of course I am game for TV shows provided they are ‘not’ the cliched saas-bahu genre. Maybe a classy comedy or a slick TV crime-thriller would excite me or even a prestigious dance reality TV show would turn me on, since I know dancing. But being shy and reserved, I don’t think I am cut out for ‘Bigg Boss’, as viewers may find me boring.

How did you get drawn towards showbiz and acting?
Always had this flair-passion for acting right from childhood. Besides being trained from TAFTA (Australia), I also did lots of plays with eminent directors in Mumbai. Luckily, I got an opportunity to work (in ‘Khoya Khoya Chaand’) with the eminent film-maker Sudhir Mishra, in the initial phase of my acting career. Besides working with Krishna (Vikram) Bhatt in the web-series‘Maya-2’ as a TV journalist, I have also acted in movies like ‘Desert Tears’, ‘Benny and Babloo’, ‘Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana’. My dream is to work someday with Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar.
