By Chaitanya Padukone

Charismatic ethnic beauty Kamna Pathak is a trained seasoned actor from the Barry John Acting Theatre and has been involved with theatre over the past decade in collaboration with various eminent directors. Not surprisingly she emerged a ‘winner’ on the reality acting TV show 'Sabse Bada Kalakaar'. Currently, the talented TV actress Kamna is cast in this new comedy-drama TV show ‘Happu Ki Ultan Paltan’ which goes on air on ‘&TV’ in the 10 pm slot on March 4th and will be aired every Monday to Friday. The Afternoon D&C connected with the exuberant Kamna for an exclusive chat

Kamna, share with us what is your new show on ‘&TV’ is all about?
Ongoing mega-hit sitcom & TV show ‘Bhabhi-ji Ghar Par Hain’ also has this corrupt, bumbling yet bossy ‘daroga’ (police inspector) highly popular character Happu Singh played by hugely talented actor Yogesh Tripathi. Home-viewers only know about his life when he is on-duty as a police officer. In this new show ‘Happu-Ki Ultan Paltan’ also produced by EDIT-II, the audiences will be able to connect with his gharelu family which comprises his pretty wife ‘Rajesh’ (that’s played by me), our nine naughty children and my saasu-maa played by Himani Shivpuri.

Your screen-character Rajesh plays mother of nine kids—how come you grabbed this role?
You must remember, that essentially I am a staunch theatre-drama artiste and every different role is a challenge for me. My ‘Bundelkhandi’ character ‘Rajesh’ also fondly called Rajjo is very challenging. Being a theatre-artiste I am not scared of being ‘type-cast’. As far as my character ‘Rajesh’, in the region where I hail from, it is common to have male-sounding names. Like my in real-life my mother’s name is Durgesh and my maasi is called Kamlesh (laughs).

Frankly I was not at all apprehensive, rather I was thrilled that out here I would get scope for performance in a drama-comedy set-up. That’s because not only is my character ‘dabangg’ by nature, she also has a love-hate relationship. Honestly speaking, I was an addicted-fan of this TV Show ‘Bhabhiji Ghar Par Hain’ and connected with daroga Happu’s character. Quite often, I would wonder, who must be playing Happu’s wife, as it was never disclosed in that show. Little did I know that someday in future I would be cast as the daroga’s biwi (shrugs).

Since you are quite young, what was your ‘prep’ for this 35 years mom’s role?
Being a theatre artiste I have previously played the roles of elderly characters. Out here I needed to wear an ethnic hair-style, shaadi-shuda homely look and traditional outfits and hone my existing skills at interacting with young naughty kids and infants. With senior stalwart actress Himani Shivpuri being my co-star, there is so much I get to learn from her ‘expressions’ and I have been her crazy fan since childhood.

You are being compared with Bollywood heroine Sonakshi Sinha from the movie ‘Dabangg’?
OMG—I take it as a huge compliment. That’s right, the ethnic looks and the hair-style flicks and the plait and my ‘dabangg’ character have all contributed to it, I guess. But honestly, it was not pre-planned, it’s by sheer coincidence. Mujhe thappad sey nahin, zyaada maskey baazi sey darr lagta hai (laughs).
